Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Always though it was strange how Luke's saber bounced off Vader's armor, while Vader's saber sliced through three rather large metal cylinders like they were butter? (Granted, Vader's armor probably has some proprietary/advanced material)

I don't see the electric baton as an effective defense, or nullifying the advantage of a lightsaber in the hands of skilled force user.

But it might keep them from loosing a limb...

I like the stormtroopers with shields and baton/tonfas to me it makes sense there'd be SOMEBODY who can stand up to a person using a lightsaber,to say no just is childish.

This movie is looking goood :D

Yeah and I thought those were dumb back then. As far as I'm concerned the only defense against a lightsaber should be another lightsaber. Not sure why electricity would block a lightsaber anyways but whatever. It's a shame weapons like that were ever introduced into the canon but they were.

I really don't see what the problem with a lightsaber proof materials is, it doesn't seem too unreasonable to me for some things to be at least resistant to lightsabers, in fact I'd find the opposite to be more unbelievable. Besides, who's to say that's electricity coming from the staff? For all we know it's generated from a photonic generator that sends out constant neutrino pulses that are heated up into a plasma.

In Empire Strikes Back we see Luke's saber bounce off Vader's shoulder armor. There's precedent for lightsabers not being unbeatable in the OT, even before it took Qui-Gon a while to cut through the blast door in Phantom Menace. I can get serious real-world physics nerd on you to explain how it works (high-power, very advanced, near-one-dimensional plasma chainsaw "spinning" at near-lightspeed is the short-short version), but metals, crystals, and other things with an abundance of free electrons will provide some resistance. They will cut through even those, given time, but the whole thing about it being melee combat means you're trying to keep the guy (or the other guy) with the lightsaber from being able to maintain contact long enough to do so.

I should've been more clear. By defense, I meant I don't think any weapon should be able to stand up against a lightsaber. A lightsaber glancing away from some sort of tough plate armor (like Vader's) is understandable to me. I always imagined if Luke could've maintained contact, it would've burned through though. A weapon that can consistently block saber blows is another matter, as far as I'm concerned. Diminishes the "cool factor" of a lightsaber to me.

Gotta love dogmatic people.

Every bald husky man in history must be Donald Sutherland.

What do you mean? Donald Sutherland is neither husky or bald.

Well considering they're called "electrostaffs" leads me to believe it's electricity.

Enh. Whether it's a weapon or armor, if it's dense metal -- charged, at that -- it's gonna be good at deflecting a ligthsaber in the brief contacts they get. The plasma field (what electricity is) would add to that. If the lightsaber wielder manages to pin the electrostaff (or whatever) wielder, the sustained pressure will get through, even with the power field. The lightsaber is good as a symbolic, formal, or ceremonial weapon, that the Jedi had developed the skill with to use more effectively than most -- being able to deflect blaster bolts and hold their own against just about any adversary. If Finn had any skill with that lightsaber I'd expect to see a repeat of the uncut Mace-Jango fight* -- a couple deflections to size up his opponent, then feint inside his guard and strike the blow. As it is, he's pretty much just desperately whaling in that brief shot.

[* For those who don't know it, as filmed Jango blocked two swipes of Mace's lightsaber with his gauntlets before Mace got inside his guard and decapitated him. Lucas trimmed out the blocks because he decided lightsabers could cut through anything -- which he immediately reversed himself on in the very next film.]

Bald and husky? Maybe he means Donald Pleasance, the Halloween guy.

We got fooled! New clip of today's Disney Behind the scenes shows a few new quick clips but the real standout is a very different delivery and take if the "Chewie, we're home" bit. Totally makes the context feel different.

That's better! The first take we saw of that was my least favorite part of all we've seen. It always seemed too hokey or forced.

I wonder if that was an alternate take...? Harrison trying out a few different takes on it and this one is one of those?

I am absolutely loving Rey so far.... I can tell that I'm going to totally identify with her in a way that I haven't since the new Lara Croft was introduced. (Sorry, Lara... I might have a second idol to add to my collection)

I'm sure it was an alternate take and I would go so far as to speculate the version we saw previously was done intentionally for marketing.

Maybe we'll get super lucky and Daisy will be cast as Lara in the new Tomb Raider movie :)
Dammit... I just set myself up for disappointment again, didn't I?
