Wow so just redoing the upper of the upper? That itself will make the shoe look entirely better because of the exposed seam, amazing! wondered if this was possible, since these have a seam behind the strap anyway, awesome to see it happening! Improves the look and is that much closer for us to a real deal shoe at a fraction of the price :cool
I think the idea here is to work out a way to do this that would allow pretty much anyone of us that can mod a shoe to do. I don't think he wants to make shoes for everyone. I know I don't, well not outside immediate friends and family anyway. It will be interesting to see where he goes with this as he seems to have found ways to get around the hurdles that stopped me in my past projects.
I for one, would love taller, more accurate uppers, but have struggled on parts like the laces. I can do tongues and cuffs and even the shell, but getting the seams right on the lace box has been where I have always stopped. The finger pull holes are also a challenge, but one he seems to have knocked out of the park.
If you look at the actual MAG patterns, there is close to 50 parts and some of those a really just showing glue and sew lines etc. So after many hours of studying these, I came to the conclusion that we would need about 18 parts to make an upper. I imported the patterns into Sketch-Up, drew and re-drew these until I was happy with the results. Anyone that wants these just needs to contact me about them.
I have made my self some plastic templates, but will need to revisit those as the finger pull holes are wrong on them.
So for the last few attempts, I was sewing inside out and flipping them to hide the seams. As a result, I was losing the shape of the upper. Vdirty has again nailed that and it is all because of the technique he has used.
Maybe his project actually needs it own dedicated thread.
