IronMeg's 2015 Costume Contest Entry - HulkBuster

Hello RPF,

This is my first time entering the costume contest so If I miss anything or post in the wrong order/place please let me know!

I am building a HulkBuster costume for this year's Halloween. :) I originally chose HB as a joke, because I'm all of 4'11" and everyone was saying I could be a "mini" HB and making jokes about what happens when Tony get's his hands on Pym Particles and shrunk his armor. However, the more I thought about it, the more I really wanted to make it. I've always had a fascination with Tony's armor suits, but being a very short female, I've never really had an armor I could fit in. Luckily HB doesn't require you to have a tiny waist to fit into the suit! It was perfect really. So, about 8 months later, here we are only a few weeks from Halloween and I've got the suit built. I'm still working on weathering and lighting up the arc reactor and repulsor blasts, but it's almost done!

Challenges along the way have been... abundant. Scaling is always difficult, but I was able to build it to be about 5'5" tall, which meant stilts. I had to make the stilts twice, because the first time they weren't tall enough. I also scaled the chest incorrectly the first time that I made it, and this required me to make it all over again. That was a huge blow to the motivation... This is also the first time I've ever made a large armor suit so learning to do the painting and weathering have been very interesting. All the folks on the RPF have been incredibly useful and helpful with that.

For my previous costuming experience, this is the second costume/cosplay that I have ever done. My first was a Hogwarts quidditch player, so this is my first big armor suit. I've made a few prop IM helmets to practice with fibreglass and foam and I definitely prefer the foam builds. Far quicker to build and more comfortable to wear :)

I've taken a lot of pictures during the build and I hope it's not too many :) I'll post what I have up to date, then later in the thread I'll add my verification shot and the final One shot to rule them all for the contest.

Also, I used SmookCMb's files for this build, and if you want to see even more pics of my build, they can be found starting on page 4.

Here is the very beginning of the build. Even here you can begin to see that the chest is too small, but I didn't notice until much later on.

Color testing different paints. I loved the gold right off.

Then after I build the second chest piece it all started to fit together nicely

Lighting up the helmet :)

Not sure why that is upside down... very strange

Anyways... this is where we are now.

Thanks for looking and I'll be adding more pics once it is weathered and ready for Halloween!

Again, there are more pics in the other thread if you want to have a look, and if I've missed any details please let me know.

Thanks!

Meg,you are now officially my favorite superheroine (I hope that doesn't sound wrong)
What an awesome suit you've made ! :thumbsup
Better win this contest,okay? ;)

Thanks guys!!! Your support has seriously made all the difference :)

I literally spent ALL WEEKEND weathering the armor. It is the first time I've ever done it and there was a bit of a learning curve, but once I got the hang of it it was a lot of fun. It was neat to cover up part of the "not so great" parts by playing them off as battle damage.

I found it really difficult to get a good picture of the battle damage, but here is a before and after shot. Left, no damage, right, damaged.

aaaand of course it's sideways. Not sure why it does that sometimes.....

Excellent Work. the scale works really well. Looks pretty mobile too.
Many thumbs up to you.

fyi if you want the picture to rotate you have to make sure it's wider than it is tall. They always flip to have the photo in landscape so you have to do some creative cropping.

Thanks! The scale was difficult to get right but it's worked out pretty well. It's mobile, but difficult to walk in. I walk a bit slow and have to take the shoes off to do stairs (the shoes are bigger than the stairs lol) but I can dance in it and that's what REALLY matters right?

and thanks for the heads up about the pictures, I'll keep that in mind.

Ok guys, only a week left till Halloween and the convention I'm going to... starting to get nervous....

On top of that, When I went to work on the torso and mounting the camera, the camera wouldn't turn on.... turns out it has been washed with my pants (it was in my pocket) and is fried -_-

So there's 100$ down the drain and I've got to figure how to see out of this beast and no time to order a new camera. Very frustrating. Luckily it all worked out for the best! (trying to stay positive over here)

Here is the chest arc reactor mounted and turned on. It is obviously WAY too bright and I'm going to sand the plexi glass to give it a dimmer appearance

(Also, just a hint, finally got it oriented the right way by rotating it, saving it, rotating it back saving it again, and it uploaded correctly.)

Test fit to ensure the arc reactor didn't make it too front heavy, again the light is way too bright. (cat tax?)

The I was on to the vision issue. So, with the HB typically being about nine feet tall, the fact that the design is pretty much constantly looking down is not much of a problem. Building it about 5.5' tall makes this look like he is very interested in everyone's shoes. So, I decided a while back that I was going to make a neck piece to make him look people in the eyes-ish. Then, during a fitting the idea struck me, that would be the perfect place to look out of. So, I built a visor that creates a bridge from the chin to the the chest, making a see through neck for me. Using an extra piece of plexi-glass and a heat gun, then attached it with velcro.

Here is after I attached it. You can see me (kinda) looking out. I'll be frosting this plastic so that it will be harder to see me behind it.

I still can't see to eye level but at least I can be sure not to step on anyone :)

Thanks for reading!

You could also try putting some mesh fabric behind your plexi instead of frosting it. I've used black fabric for a couple of projects but if you could find it in red, it would blend in with your paint job better.

Hmmm gootd idea. I just got back from the craft store and I bought some white acrylic paint to further dampen the light at a friends suggestion. If this doesn't work I'll look into trying that. Thanks!

Oh I meant the part you're looking out of, not the part with the arc reactor. Sorry, I wasn't clear enough in my comment! But a mesh fabric might work there too.

Oh Ha! That makes sense :) Great idea. The frosting was too dark for me to see out of so I had to remove that. I will definitely pick up some mesh fabric and see how that goes. thanks for the idea!

Hello again, I hope everyone's had a great weekend.

Thanks Yrien for the idea, the mesh worked perfectly to darken it up to make me harder to see behind the plexiglass.

The armor is as "complete" as a cosplay can be. There will always be changes that I want to do to it but I'm very happy with where it is now. Next weekend, I think it will be a big hit :)

My verification shot:

If you need one of me actually in the suit holding it I can do that, this was just easier.

A few action shots, and my fiance being funny:

None of these pictures have been filtered in any way.
Please let me know if there is anything else I need for the contest.
Thanks for reading!

Meg,you rock and you're gonna win this thing :thumbsup
(P.s.: I didn't know we had a contest going on? Thought it was just a catchy title for your build...)

Thanks guys! The fitting and picture taking was a lot of fun. Still some tweaks I need to make but I'm really loving this build.
