Hardening Pepakura, without fiberglass. Help!

So for a while now i have been searching for a way to harden pepakura without using weird resins that you mix together and that can seriously injure me. I've looked around and i haven't quite found a topic that suits me.
So my predicament is, I'm trying to create a suit, and a prop gun out of pepakura. And i don't know a way to harden any of it thats not dangerous or outrageously expensive.
The suit and gun will both be worn/held, so i want them to be sturdy so i wouldn't have to fix them when they're not in use. Most things that don't require mixing components together i can do, i just need help finding which will work and which wont. Also im okay if resins are the only way to go, im sure i can find one suitable for me.

you may try PVA glue and layers of newspaper. it will get quite hard after few layers. but i don't think it will be as durable as resin. -- just my opinion

I've been sporadically experimenting with a mix o' materials for just the very purpose you're referencing. It's been pretty effective to date, but I've moved away from the helmet build I was doing with the mix, (haven't had the interest &/or time I need to devote to it). The big drawbacks are that it has a long set time, (appx. 2-3 days, if the layer is pretty thick), & there's some shrinking if layer is really thick.

Anyway, I wasn't planning on sharing the info until I'd fully tested it & was satisfied with the ratio of materials, had fully timed things, etc, but - if it'll help - here's what I've been using:

1 part 'school glue'
1 part flour
1 part 'Durham's Water Putty', (I stumbled upon this for another project a while back & it's great, but brittle when set...hence the flour & glue)
1/2 to 1 1/2 parts water, (varies depending on the thickness you're goin' for, obviously)

It really has been quite effective at doing what you're referencing. Still, it's not fully proven - for me - yet, so I can't say definitively it would work for ya'. :)

Hope that helps...
