Diamond Select Star Trek Tricorder

I desperately want to upgrade the light behind the screen. Hopefully someone more skilled than me will do it first and post a tutorial. :)

The science tricorders aren't expected in the country until the end of the month. I think New Force has been quoting two more weeks until they hit, so I'd expect everyone else should be in the same boat, literally.

New Force takes PayPal, and they are selling BOTH the science AND the medical tricorders, FYI. :)

So does anyone have the science on yet? I keep seeing pics of the McCoy hand scanner, and all the talk about it, but I am yet to see a pic of the scanner that comes with the science one.

When I found out about these, I was disappointed that I probably wouldn't be able to order a Medical one, since I could only find them for pre-order at EE,. (They only take credit cards, and I don't have one) But after reading the reviews, I'm not so disappointed, I think the science one will be more up my ally anyway.

The science version has not shipped yet. It's suppose to start shipping around the 24th of June.

How'd you get that thing open?

the clear top just pops off carefully! and pried and squeezed at the seam..........:lol not easy but I find there is not a lot of glue holding it together, I think they smeared most of it on the Tricorder it's self?:lol

I got mine open by slipping a jeweler's screwdriver between the silver base disc and the black body. There's a tiny indent or tab or something on the black part in line with the battery cover; I got the driver in there and wiggled a bit and it popped apart pretty easily.

Found that indent. Thanks.

Got it open. Tons of space to reconfigure.

Also. On the Tric, shouldn't the hood be angled back when open?

Trimming back the big silver crossbar would solve it.

Okay...I've got a little work done.

I've repainted the screen, covered the LED's with jewels, and muffled the speaker.

Here are some pics...

And here's three more, with better closeups. :)

I really think painting the screen makes an unbelievable difference in making this look like a tricorder...

I bought two and received them yesterday. One of them has a completely unacceptable paint defect on the front of the left hand side rail near the screen. I wrote EE this morning about a replacement and received an RMA about two hours ago. :thumbsup

The one that I opened had a paint defect on the backside. I can live with that one. As others have said, the McCoy voice is off. Maybe it will sound better with less voltage, ie., when the batteries have worn down some. I love the other two scanning sounds. As for the screen, I agree with others but it doesn't really bother me. If I were to criticize anything, it would be the manufacturing quality control due to the paint quality of my examples. All in all, I am generally happy with it. I would have killed for this thing when I was a kid. Now all I had to do was plop down 40 plus bucks for one!

I do have a question... On the one that I am playing with... I mean examining, the textured pattern of the casing is well defined except for the front and back of the rotating top (when closed). Does anyone else have this problem?
