The Official Avatar Colonel Miles Quaritch "Wasp" Pistol Research Thread

I wouldn't be suprised if the entire gun was custom except for the very barebones of the firing revolver that was used as the base. If anything it looks like a Dan Wesson PPC.

Reminds me of the Crosman 3357 Paint Marker.
Has that wierd cylinder thing going on.
PS: This was also the base gun for that Rutger Hauer film "SPLIT SECOND"

Re: The Official Avatar Colonel Miles Quaritch Pistol Research Thread

Great feedback, guys! :thumbsup

I e-mailed TyRuben Ellingson, who worked on the conceptual vehicle & AMP suit designs for Avatar (you can watch him in a couple of video interviews discuss his work), because the top break reminded me of the Hellboy Samaritan, which is also his design. He replied right away, which was extremely cool of him, but unfortunately, this time he had no hand in the weapon designs - that was all done by WETA. I've sent an inquiry their way, so keep your fingers crossed.

Does anyone here know someone at WETA?

Keep the ideas coming! :)

You're assuming Cameron isn't a limp wristed shooter. He very well could be.
If you watch closely, it appears he's actually faking the recoil. He has to be shooting blanks, & the kick is just happening way too late. IMO. *shrugs*

Well, even with blanks, revolvers have more recoil than semi-autos, especially if it's a large caliber.

Fake or not, still pretty cool!

Looks kinda silly, too much gun for guns sake, like a revolver with a angled handle, sight on bottom and like a glock slide on top, doesent look like they made it to be just functional, like they made it just to look like a big sidearm? ... That being said loved the movie and if someone made one I would want it lol

This is a really cool looking gun.
I'm saying this so that I'm automatically subscribed to this thread.
That is all.

If WETA built this there is every chance it's firing flash caps and the cylinder turning is just for show.

It reminds me a whole lot of a pistol I worked on with craig kovach for a movie he did a few years back that was based on the thunder five revolver. I'll have to dig out some photos. The trigger guard and grip especially remind me of it.

I just got back from the IMAX 3D digital screening of the film. First of all: wow... Second of all: Can you fire flash caps 6 times in succession (as Quaritch does chasing Sully and his fellow mutineers) while the camera is rolling? If not, then the muzzle flash was rendered in later, but I don't think so - there's no reason. Did you watch the James Cameron clip? He empties a full cylinder, and the muzzle flash is real. Why can't we assume the gun is just firing blanks, especially if the base gun is a real revolver?

I also can confirm after seeing the film that the upper housing is a targeting or thermal imaging scope of some kind because light reflects off a glassy front surface while Quaritch is firing. Unfortunately, if there was a scene where he loads or reloads the gun, it was cut from from the final print - we'll never know how or why the gun breaks, unless the DVD has special features and/or deleted scenes showing it.

Since WETA did design this weapon, I'm hopeful Sideshow gets the license, as it did for their Samaritan. BTW, the other semi-auto Sully & Chacon use has a Galaxy Quest Nebulizer or TOS phaser-like extended rear breech (but not as streamlined) & it looks like a pretty sweet piece of heat as well - I'll have to look for good screen caps. :)

Screw that, I hope Weta Collectibles get it.

I doubt this piece would justify starting a new line of replicas, especially given the fact that they don't replicate firearms, aside from those ridiculously-expensive Dr. Grordbort line of steam-punk & retro ray-guns. They've already licensed the AMP suit to Sideshow, so it stands to reason any other AVATAR weapon replica would be too.

Not that I'd object if they did, mind you! :)

Sure, you can fire multiple times with flash caps.

I doubt the Wasp is a flash cap gun, but I don't think WETA builds from real firearms, so it crossed my mind.
WETA never made a quasi-contemporary-military-hardware-heavy film like this before either, so I wouldn't rule out real firearms as a precedent. Besides, it's pretty clear Cameron is experiencing recoil when he fires the Wasp, and in your clip, the flash cap Beretta 92 has zero recoil. Case closed, if you ask me.

Don't forget all the mounted MGs on the Scorpions, Samsons, and other hand-carried SMGs that demonstrate clear recoil, not actor-faked. Most likely all of them clam-shell disguised conventional firearms (after all, Cameron *DID* give us the Pulse Rifle...) :D

Either way, thanks for joining the discussion! :)

It's curious though, what appears to be the hammer doesn't move when Cameron is firing it.

The reason I think it's a real revolver in there though is because just before the cut Cameron looks like he's about to swing out the cylinder. :)

I don't think that's real recoil either though. I've fired blanks in revolvers about 1000 times, and even full load blanks don't have recoil.

and hey, I love discussing movie guns, so, thanks for starting the thread

Oh hell, I'm not even going to venture a guess. The cylinder looks like the only thing stock, and the notches are going the wrong direction for it to be a charter arms or a smith and wesson, and the trigger is much farther away from the cylinder than those guns too.
