Creating acid-etch metal appearance?

I spent way longer than I figured it would take, trying every search boolean I could think of, and no joy. Hundreds of results on how to acid-etch just about any metal, how to tell real from fake, etc., but nothing about how to simulate the texture with other materials. Before I start experimenting with what I've got on-hand (like daubing RustOleum's automotive filler primer with a wet sponge before it dries), does anyone have any resources, pointers, or experiential anecdotes?

You could try acrylic texture mediums? Sponge is probably a good method for introducing texture as you work with them. Some even have fine sand mixed in, might produce the kind of texture you're looking for. Depends how fine you need the finish.
