Just wanted to start documenting this as I work on it. I dont have plans to make a full size Tardis, but after finding out that this garden lantern found at Menards for around $50, I thought it would be a cool prop to have on a shelf, maybe with a blinking light inside if I can work one out. Ive already disassembled the lantern for painting. The part that needs the most work is the top section. The small section with the vent holes in the middle of the top two disks needs to be cut out.

    Looks good.

I wanted to get one of those lanterns, but the 2 places I found that had them were in the UK, and would not ship to the US.

I didnt know they were here in the US either until a saw a friend of mine had one and then I checked out my local Menards and bam, there it was. Similar home improvement store might have them, mine was on display with outdoor yard tent things.

update! After disassembling everything and painting the parts I got it all back together again. The tp piece was not painted yet as I had still not cut out the middle section between the domes yet, I just finished that. I basically twisted the crimped edge of metal on the bottom edge inside and then cut the rest of the cone out of the top dome. I will now glue these two together and paint, even though the scew on top holds them together very tightly. Obviously the paintjob isnt done, just the first base color. Ill then start doing the darker blue weathering and smoking the glass up a bit. I also need to find the little candle or light cup for the inside, as my model didnt have this. Im not sure what type of light to put inside once Im done though, hard to tell what they used for the practical shot seen in "New Earth." Ill also need to find a little dodad for the top screw, probably just some lamp decorative screw. Getting there!

Ok, got the top piece all done and painted and the paint weathering and glass scuffing done. Hard to see in the pics though. Again, still working out the light, just used a candle for now. Couple pics of it in with my other 2005-06 WHO stuff!

Very, very nice. An excellent job.

It looks to me from using the picture above in your first post, the one pic of the lantern looking down from the top- that the bulb may not be up in the unit itself, but be lighting up from the bottom of it. You can see the white circle in the picture... could that be the top dome of some type of very bright light bulb?

Have you tried here for more info on this- http://tardisboard.proboards43.com/ - this is a great site for TARDIS building.

Edited for being slow on my posting. :P

I like this picture. It looks like the Glow of a TARDIS just starting up.

Your work has inspired me. I must find a lantern somewhere.

holy crap! After checking out this link from the Tardis Rebuilders forum, ive almost 100% confirmed the lantern Ive got is 100% right. The little piece that screws on the top, I thought was wrong on mine and tossed it aside, but from the closeup pics of the lantern here of the Tardis being assembled, its identical! The lantern I got was SLIGHTLY different than the one i pictured above in its original form, mine had this small top piece and a domed piece below it.
