    Aug 18, 2012 - Will oven cleaner rust/damage/pit carbon steel? #1

Looking to "weather" a sword for a display (meaning make it pitted, rusty, old, etc), and need a decent way to do it.

The blade is carbon steel, it's a cheap wall hanger sword.

Would oven cleaner start the job easy enough, or would I be better off just throwing salt and water on it?

Kinda thinking "attack with crazed dremel tool" and then spray oven cleaner on it, and after a few coats hitting it with vinegar to stop the reaction.

    Anyone have any ideas?

You would need hydrofluoric or nitric acid. Nitric eats through carbon steel but doesn't affect aluminum.
