Sep 25, 2012 - Where to buy ash? (i.e. stuff left over after a fire) #1

Looking for a fair sized batch of ash, specifically black.

Cannot seem to find anything online that isn't volcano or lumber related.

Having a senior moment when it comes to search terms or where to look, so any advice is welcome on this.

    thanks!

Don't know about ash specifically, but what about pulverized charcoal dust from BBQ brickettes? I have used that for weathering models in the past, both the black coal dust before it is burned and the grey ash that is left after some burgers are done cooking.

Maybe an art supply house like Meininger would have it? This is a local chain here in Colorado, but maybe you have something similar near you?

maybe I'm missing something, but...why don't you just burn something down and collect the ash?

I think you can pick up Ash at S-mart in the housewares section.

Nothing to burn it in, and by the time I get the grill/bucket/charcoal/lighter fluid/etc I would have already spent the cash getting the "pre-made" stuff

    Bad pun contec, bad pun.

If the briquettes don't work out, let me know. I've got buckets of the stuff. I was planning on using some for a build of mine coming up too.

I just ordered a pound of activated charcoal powder off ebay for about 13$.

If you go the "grind it" route, PLEASE wear a respirator.

The "dust" I found was embossing dust, and misc other art supplies, but they were like 6$ for 4 oz of it.

Will update when it gets in and I can post some pics
