I just found an original on ebay and added the leather strap (original was fabric). It shouldn't be olive drab, it's khaki.

WPG's strap is fake leather so you might consider Wade Egan: items in WadeEganGear store on eBay!
You did say "the best."![]()
Yup, WPG is the place to get them price vs quality balance-wise![]()
I have both the real and replica bags from WPG and both have real leather straps.
I use the replica all the time and have had no problems with it.
The real one is in mint condition and dated 1942
What Price Glory is great for the real ones, Todd's costumes also sell a nice bag. their quality went down for a while but they have stepped back up the quality now to a very solid nice bag at a good price:

I have had only WPG bags. My first was a repro and lasted many years. The strap was real leather and thick. Thicker than Todd's; I met some one with a Todd's and we compared.
My second was a real bag from 1942 and it last only a year. The strap fell off because the canvas rotted out.
I now have another repro and I wear my bag everyday.
The WPG repro bag pockets are different than the real. The real 1942 bag has a strip of canvas dividing the main pocket in the middle. The strip does not go all the way to the bottom of the bag so items can shift back and forth. I prefer the repro because it does not have this strip. Nice large main pocket.
My opinion,

With the real ones they can be many colors depending on where they where made.
Green through mustard yellow.
There was a thread over on COW with a list of known makers (and countries) and people posted pictures of the ones they had.
I have bought WPG bags but I wouldn't recommend it for use other than display or occasional costuming. I mean, the bag itself will hold up, but the canvas straps are always the first to go. That's understandable as they've rotted pretty well over the last 70 years. The one I have (exchanged my original purchase after the straps ripped apart in less than a week of having it) is still in fine condition besides one of the snaps coming apart, nothing super glue couldn't fix, with some new straps sewn on so it could stand up a bit longer.
I also have one of Magnoli's bags that I use quite frequently (before he changed the color from Khaki to Olive green and a few other things). It's a great substitute and I recommend that for anyone wanting a good reproduction. I don't know about his new bags, though. I'm only speaking from what I know about his bags prior. From his photos, it looks to be the same as the old ones but with a new color, more accurate metal disc, and green rope loop instead of it being khaki.
Here's a link to the Magnoli Bag: British Mark VII Satchel by Magnoli Clothiers
The newest run was made of a heavier/thicker canvas, more accurate green color and all new hardware.
I think people misunderstand the term.
British issue is KHAKI. Not Green, not olive drab, Khaki.
However, Khaki at that time had a wide spectrum ranging from almost green to outright yellow.
From the research I've seen, Indy's khaki bag is on the green side but sun bleached. If you want to look accurate to the character you need a dark khaki (similar to olive drab) and then give it a lot of wear. Or just go for a slightly lighter khaki.![]()

According to "Banana Republic, Guide to Travel and Safari Clothing" Ballantine Books 1986 page 19.
Khaki - derives from the Hindustani word for dust.
So technically any color the ground happens to be can be considered Khaki.
Originally conceived in 1846 by Punjab-based British Officer Lieutenant Harry Lumsden.
Dying his cotton pajamas with an extract from a native plant called Mazari.
In 1884 the standard Tawny-colored dye was patented in Manchester England.
My first run of bags had a more drab-tan tone, but the newer ones are more olive-green and definitely a good color for an Indy costume.
What do you think about this one? It comes with the strap for under $30.00.

Though I am really looking at Magnoli's right now!
Personally, I think it looks a little too green based on some of the pictures. I'm not an expert though.
Magnoli's would be the choice for me. There's always something tiny and nitpicky to change, but for my money, his is just as good as the original thing if not better because they aren't 70+ years old and slowly rotting.
Man this is so hard! The Magnoli bag seems nicer, I like the stamp inside the flap and the snaps seem better, but Tod's had WORKING drain holes in it. I don't know why that is important to me, but it seems to be for some reason...
I bought a Todd one and put some Fullers Earth in a garbage bag, tossed the bag in and shook it up. It lightened the green a bit and looks great.
