Aug 16, 2012 - What props could use an old Touch Screen? #1

I have an old touch screen smart phone, and there are several models available basically for free on ebay. I figure there must be ways to use touchscreens in a costume somehow. Any ideas on what could be done?

I am still trying to decide what to do for halloween this year, if there are any good ideas using this, I might go with that!

Take photos on tons of cell phones of a costume like Darth Vader. Take every inch of the costume as someone wears it, and use one phone per photo.

Now, cover every inch of yourself with smartphones attached to a bodysuit, including a hood. Having photographed every inch of the costume, the photos on the phone will create the image of the costume.

Put phones on one side of you with the screen facing out, and on the other side with the camera facing out. Figure out how to stream video from one to the other.

    And achieve thermoptic camouflage!

(This isn't the costumer you're looking for. He can go about his business.)

You can do that on the iPhone easy enough. There's an app for that

You could attatch one to a headband or something similar and set it up with the screen displaying nothing but red. Put it over your eyes and with a couple more touches and some leathers and you have a basic X-Men Cyclops costume. Easy as.

You could use it for a Lost Satellite phone? http://www.geek.com/gearlog/images/photo-4.jpg

There must be other things like this, I assume that was the direction you were headed in?

I don't get that sort of thing. Why didn't they just use a real sat phone?

Oh, wait, I know: because real sat phones don't tend to have such huge displays on which they could put ridiculously unsubtle and patronising graphics about what it's supposed to be.

if it's just about a touch screen, the only thing that comes in my mind is the Pipboy 3000 (or, although this wouldn't be 100% screen accurate, this wrist-thing Leela from Futurama wears).

If it's about a smart phone (and the good thing about "old" things is that you don't have to pay soooo much attention whether or not it survives the costume ), you could use it for tons of things, is it just to support your costume with music, or, depending the smartphone and possible apps, pimp up your props.

I remember a friend of mine had a shotgun-app for his iPhone, and depending on how you held it, it would make the sounds of a shotgun firing or loading. Imagine that app on a phone set into a prop shotgun...just came into my mind

Federal Police in the new Total Recall movie had some electronics on their wrists ala-PipBoy.
