So, a test on my 'crapizoid' Playmates phaser with Rustoleum Chrome:

Seems to have worked okay. Serious work ensues on my Art Asylum ones next.

Ron Tracy would have liked this thread.

I like this- It's not bad for a midgrade phaser.

When I first saw these toys, I had aked, "Where were these 40 years ago?" Then Art Asylum trumpt Playmates. But still, when these first came out, I had used one at a Captain Kirk Look-a-Like gig and some guy, who didn't know any better, offered me $60.00 for my Playmates Phaser. I think he was trying to get one over on me believing he was getting the "real deal" with the shady attitude he had toward me at the time.

I should have sold it to the schlub, but my conscience wouldn't let me.

    Good stuff.
How well does it stand up to handling ? I always have bad lick with metallic paint, stickyness and marks.

Because you asked, I just went & felt up the parts I painted even though it's not 24 hrs yet- result: very smooth & not at all sticky.

Nice! I don't know about the durability of the Rustoleum chrome, but it sure does look good.

Since this is a test piece, all I did was wipe it down- no primer whatsoever. I want to see how durable it is that way.

    Daylight shot:

I played with it a bit, even dragged my nail lightly across- seem pretty stable so far.

I understand the cheap paint- made the final product exceptionally less expensive, and peeps like us that demand more can always do it for ourselves.

I did a quick (real quick) putty & sand of the seam over the top front silver piece as part of the test. I'll be putting pressure on it to see if it cracks easily (which, of course it will). On the AA phasers I'm still on the fence about getting rid of the seam. It'd be simple if I glued the area, but then getting it apart in the future for any reason would be REALLY involved.
    Ideas?

Do it like the originals, make the plate from sheet aluminum. Glue it on with silicone, then it can be removed if needed. You could even use styrene and paint it.

Yeah, the crapizoid Playmates suddenly doesn't look so bad- the AA will be eye-popping with real chrome bits.
I've seen other phasers on Hobbytalk that are astounding, all sanded down, painted up from scratch & such. Problem is, if you need to work on some part inside or change a led, you're out of luck as the screw holes were filled in. I'm just doing the chrome stuff. That's amazing enough for me.
