Here's a project we are incredibly excited about. War Machine from digital movie files.
Here is a test print of the faceplate so we could reference size. Happy with it. Now to get the rest of the helmet printed.

Thought I'd throw up a few more pics to show it beside my new IronMan MK2 faceplate and a side profile. Really happy with how it printed.

Where are you getting these printed? Was it reasonable?
unless they're being done "in-house" where it would undoubtedly be cheaper...it would cost a fortune to print a whole helmet...
a few weeks ago i looked into a hi-res iron man helmet print from shapeways.....it would have cost quite a few hundred dollars...almost a thousand if i remember correctly...
I suppose if you printed one, made a mold from that and did a run, the profit would outweigh the cost after 2/3 helmets sold. Looks real nice. Colour me interested.
Yes but it's not that easy.Need to do a throw away mold then remaster that pull. It comes out very nice but def needs some clean up and smoothing. Then make another mold and start casting. Lots of detail in this faceplate alone so casting is going to be a trick as well. I don't think it'll be a problem but it's not just make a mold and go. It's in the JY if your interested.

The faceplate doesn't match the first image?
The first image isn't the completed and final version that was 3d printed. detailing in the eyes was added to the faceplate.
Also, the first few images look a little odd because you can see through the eye sockets into the main body of the helmet, further making the faceplate look different from the 3d print.
Well we got the rest of the print today and couldn't be happier. Fin will work on doing his finishing early next week and it should be ready for molding.

is that resin or Zcorp material, you know that starch stuff?
So pretty (: Were the polys quadrified or did you guys use them triangulated?
there were a few small customizations done to the mesh that helped make the msmooth and turbosmooth modifiers produce some nice results. I didn't use the Quadify on the model.
After some growing pains with learning how to manipulate the printed material, Finhead was able to get this just about ready for molding. Just a few bolts to add in still.

And a final pic with the bolt details added ready to mold.

not to **** in any ones tea here - but post 16 pic 2 shows evidence of peping when you look at the back of the bottom of the helmet from the inside....
How do you figure that is evidence? Because there's Bondo/gelcoat inside the helmet? I think you wanna be sure what you're talking about before making wild accusations.
It was clearly 3D printed as you can see from previous photos. Why would we go back and pep it?? Give your head a shake.
Now not that I need to explain to you but in the interest of defending the hard work that went into this and you are trying to take away - the 3D print was thin and needed to be backed for rigidity before any bodywork could be performed. THAT is what you see in the pics, eagle eye. Gel coat and bondo.
If that was a pep, then clearly all my 3d prep work to make it printable was all in vain. Not sure if you're trying to pick a fight here, but you're barking up the wrong tree in accusing Clinton, Kevin and I of falsifying the work we've all done to get the helmet to where its at now. Kevin is correct in saying the helmet was printed thin. I modeled it to a 1mm thickness to keep printing costs lower. What you're seeing is primer over-spray sanded down to the white plastic underneath.
I don't really care if you don't believe us or not. Kevin and Clinton have a solid reputation and are outstanding guys, so for you to come in and accuse them of lying isn't cool. Especially off of one photo among dozens. Pictures of the freshly printed helmet pieces have already been posted. If that is not enough for you then its too bad.
That looks great. Liking the detailing on the edges, the scuffed up metal is nicely done.
when you say "from digital movie files," what are you referring to exactly?
great print by the way.
