There has been much speculation that that the ESB dome is a re-tooled ANH. It's very old news to most.

So other than the marginally wider centre strip, the widows peak trim, the thinner trimming of the ESB, And the left hand curve inward flare and not forgetting the new paint job.. Is that really it?

I've spent a very long time doing this research and not just the simplistic findings.

This thread was actually prompted when I was surprised to learn that a couple of people thought the centre strips between the two domes were the same width and size. They are not the same size, but it's easy to think that, as the glossy paint work on the ESB and the lighting highlight the centre strip as being thicker additionally.

    Thoughts???

There's no question the ESB dome came from an ANH dome....although I won't say which one .

I can compare my GH ANH dome...the lower flaring edge, with the Paul Allen ESB original stunt dome or the Desi Dosantos original ESB dome....there's no mistaking the ESB came from an ANH...

The ESB dome does seem to have been cleaned up compared to the ANH. Looking at the nice photos of the DJ dome and comparing that to the hero ESB is a good indication of that...the Paul Allen stunt dome wasn't prepped up as much as the hero dome. Good question, though .

    Yep, thanks Thomas.

As stated I think we all agree it came from ANH, the thumb indent in the trimmed peak is a dead giveaway, amongst other things.

So did they just sand down the trimming of the edges, Trimmed the peak, and how have they widened the centre strip? Is it a case of sanding down the exsisting ANH strip, making it flatter and thus wider or have they added some width through bondo, putty, fibreglass etc..

My guess...just a guess...is from sanding although it could also be partly how it came out of the mold. The ANH strip was not "perfect" so as with so many other things they probably wanted to make the dome as clean as possible....since they trimmed or sanded the flaring to be sharper and cleaner, it is possible a byproduct of that was loss of the widow's peak. But I'm just guessing here...

Speculation is always going to be on the cards but that's pretty much similar to my take on it aswell.

It's obvious to me that they have taken an ANH dome, sanded down the trimming all round, especially at the sides although not symmetrical to each other and trimmed the widows peak.

The bit that I'm slightly unsure of is how did they achieve a wider centre strip and was it from sanding down the exsisting ANH or adding more width physically with material. I think it could be a combination from a sand down job and then as you say from the molds. But wouldn't that leave one dome with a sharper centre strip or would the paint especially with it being a gloss finish disguise that?

I am still under the impression that the screen ESB dome looks smaller in the movie compared with similar shots in ANH. I cannot prove that since I wait for the return of my XXXX ANH helmet to compare it with my TM ESB dome directly.

The ESB should be of a similar size, did you compare these things from the archives?

Also the dome mount from the ESB is going to add some height, I think ESB is of very similar size.

As your TM ESB doesn't have a mount do you not think that maybe you have the HOTH helmet (ESB Dome/ANH Face) as a possibility, not screen used but the same batch that never came to be. If you put a mount that would heighten the appearence of the dome and that may look as the Hoth Vader, make sense?

the 2 pics you posted of the ANH and the ESB are just amazing in that I never realized how much the changed the mask itself from movie to movie-its a totall different Vader in ESB from ANH-and the dome on the ESB, being originated from ANH is different-but I think the mask changes could make the dome look a little more different than it actually is.

Yep the differences are quite surprising. Not just in the dome movie to movie but the facemask as well as the armour, Chestbox, belt etc.. etc.. This would be a ridiculously lengthy thread if all those variations were highlighted. Every Vader is indeed unique, but tweaked in each film with the subtle and not so subtle changes.

Also, there were a few different helmets for each film. Lets not forget that.

Yup... quite a bit of differences. Did this one a while ago... not the best... but definitely shows some of the differences:

Nice comparrison pic... I wonder if it was Prowse wearing the ANH costume though - he looks very narrow-shouldered and skinny

***EDIT Forgot to say, maybe it's because the shoulder armour is missing under his cape? Would definitely make his shoulders look narrower EDIT ***
