    Sep 28, 2008 - Too thick silicone... help #1

Hey guys, here’s my situation…I’ve got a couple of gallons of RTV silicone that has been sitting in the shop for several months. Yeah, I got busy with other things and completely forgot about using it. The silicone still seems to be “good” but has thickened just slightly. I degassed some earlier today and it is still usable but just a little too thick to just pour.

So with that said, is there anything I can use to thin the silicone to make more flowable?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Yes there are thinning agents that I've seen Smooth On makes. Reynolds advanced materials carries Smooth On products or you can go straight to Smooth On directly. For some molds the thicker silicone can be an advantage unless you are pooring it in a case mold. It may be ideal if you are layering your silicone after each layer kicks.

dont know about the thinning agents?

but if i were you i would get some new silicone and use that as your initial coats on whatever your molding then bulk it out with this thicker stuff.

Add a very small amount of silicone oil. most silicones have a shelf life of at least six months (depending on temp)
