Tom Baker Sonic Screwdriver SHOCKING EVIDENCE!

Looking over these pictures, the licenced classic sonic looks pretty good to me. Has anyone bought it who can comment? I'm sorely tempted, and the display is great.

I'm hoping to some day buy a TLP piece. I really like their variety. XD

Is there an actual video posted anywhere of the Thunderbirds scene, or just the stills? I'm really curious to see it in action. :)

Thanks!

I have his second attempt at a McGann, it's VERY good.
Yeah i seen that on eBay and kicked myself for not saving some cash ahead of time. That collapsing bit is bloody excellent! Please, you must post some detailed pics of it! i simply must get a good look at that wonderful idol of geek worship! XD

I've been following this thread since the first post. The only thing "shocking" is the lack of evidence.

Exactly! :) ...no wait...

Not to toot my own horn too much but I helped him with the details using loads of screen captures, image isolations and a diagram that Phase Pistol did (with his permission, of course).

I do have to post some shots of it.

You you lucky devil you! XD BTW, does THAT sonic havea working activation sleeve too? I always wondered.

Yes you do! :angry Do eet! Do eet naow! :lol

Newp, it just telescopes and looks dayumed cool.

Telescoping is just as good i think. ^_^ Unfortunately I think we may had hit the wall in trying to identify if ANYTHING matched up in any way to the Sonic prop and could therefore been made from pre-existing parts XP I've read five other forums threads and they gave up too in as little as one page some places. XP

I shot BoatBuilder an email and he said to look at the local hardware store. I figured if it was that easy we would have had this found by now but I was wrong :lol

Here is what you are looking for, about $2.00 at True Value hardware store. It is a dead on match (color and all, it is really close to the color of the powder coated heads on Russ's Sonics). It screws right in using the screw that came with the Sonic. They are hanging with all of the rest of the magnets no less (This is obviously a ploy to confuse the found object prop activist who is required to over think the location of even the simplest object :lol).

Too cool! Sounds like C.T. got his information wrong on the size!

BUT... it's still the wrong color. Sure, it's fine if you're doing one of the variations that had the red magnet on it. But the most commonly seen variation of the 4th Doctor's sonic screwdriver had a BLACK magnet on the emitter head. Anyone had any luck finding them in black yet? :confused

Well, we have no idea as we don't know what size the original emitter was. Russ's version is too small, so he may be right.
If I Remember Correctly, he said the 12.5 mm/½" magnet wasn't small ENOUGH. But I might be remembering what he said incorrectly.

I think I'll check Home Despot and Lowe's, see if they carry any of the black ones.

Well Russ's version takes the 12.5mm mag and Russ's version is too small.

Why do we think Russ's is too small? Do we have any form of a measurment off of it (not a story of a measurment, like a photo with a ruler [and not one that nobody can see :)]) that can be used as refrence. It seem like a bit of a quicidence that a found item that has not changed much and that is still currently avalible matches the size of the bullet on Russ's Sonic dead on (and looks exactly like the screen cap's) but that it is the wrong size. What is the source of the info?

I am not trying to be confrontational, I would just like to know if there is a real known size for the bullet what is it and what is the source of the info.

From reading "Ectropy's" post from pg.7 it sounds like only one sonic head may have had the magnent added for a specific scene (the red one that matches these in the screen caps). For all we know the parts on the other heads may not have even been magnets.

I contacted Mat Irvine, formerly of the BBC Visual Effects Department, in an attempt to obtain more info on the classic sonic screwdriver.

Quate from Mat Irvine:
Sorry, I'm probably not going to be of much use here. The only contact I recall ever really having with that particular incarnation of the Sonic Screwdriver, was (I think?) during the Pertwee era. Then, as one of the new Assistants in the Visual Effects Department, I added a button magnet (as you surmise) to the top. (Presumably as The Doctor has to pick up something ferrous - though at this stage, don't ask me what!) Apart from that, although the SS was part of the standard equipment we would have taken into any Who studio, that was about it.

I'm just going off the TimeLordsPocket and Licenced version. To me based on the screencaps that we have, the dimensions are spot on. TLP also uses button magnets that are larger than 12.5mm. These are available, though not as readily as the 12.5.
