Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build

Day 2...

Measure the size of the join point for the Stocks ~arm~.

Cut off the piece you need, compair to the pictures and you'll get a good idea on the size the arm is.

From here it's a choice: If this is just a display piece, make the arm dead on accurate, If you're like me and this is going to be carried at Con's as part of a costume, make it a bit more beefy like I did. Yes, Mine it 1/4" thicker then the one in the photos from the show. I DID make the accurate one...twice, and both broke.
This round part, at the end of the Recon, is what I attached the stock to.

I ripped a 2x4 to the corect size, making it a lot longer then I knew I really needed.

Then drilled the mounting hole that will attach it to the rifle.

Test fit to be SURE it aligns corectly. If the mounting hole is off, it'll be way out of alignment and not look right.

distance I used was 3/4", cut TWICE with a 1/8" saw blade, then measure again 3/4", repete...

Fit onto prop for compairison, then dremel the cuts to soften the sharp edges.

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build

Now for the shoulder piece...

Cut and sand the bottom...

Sand off the round piece...

Top section is at the wrong angle so you have to cut it off, then re-attach it...

Dremel the piece so it fits togeather corectly...

Fill the piece with fiberglass, NOT bondo, you'll be drilling and tapping into it so you'll need the tougher material...

Rough sand all the joins flush...

Next we make two pieces for the sides. I used 1/16" clear acrilic.

Shaped to fit, gorilla glued on...

next!...

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build

Cut out templates for the pieces that mount to the sides...

Sand both togeather so they're exactly the same size...

while still togeather, drill and then counter sink the holes...

Fitment done, sanded, painted, check how it looks...

next....soon as the images upload to imageshack :P

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build

The, uh..."Top Scope thingy"...

Disassemble the two lites from the Recons.

Of course they don't just get glued togeather, that would have been easy. They both need to be cut as shown to line up corectly.

Line up and glue, then cut the front and rear. NOTE!!! there IS a left/right side to this piece, make sure you check the original prop pictures so you get these cuts right!!!!

Fill the piece with fiberglass, rough sand it to corect shape. Next the holes need to be drilled. I used a drill press with a piece of wood bolted down so the line of holes was absolutly dead on in line. Do the same with the smaller holes.

The trigger guard has a little nubby on it, cut or sand it off, also remove the clip release buttons for the Nerf Dart Clip. Fill both and rough sand to shape.

Using the second Nerf guns stock, cut as shown in the picture, also remove the round piece on the main body. This is where the lower hand-hold attaches.

Mark where the pieces will join, this makes ligning them up when gluing them SO much more easy.

Me loves Gorilla Glue

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build

Recon #2...

Sad that this is all you use, it gets choped up a LOT. NOTE!! look at the next picture, you need to save that front piece with the rounded part on it!!

Cut to fit. The piece with the RED lines an it shows where that needs to be cut as well. That piece is joiined to the underside of the front, under the barrel.

Here's where that piece goes, make sure it's a good fit and will hold well. This part suports the flashlite you'll get to later.

Short Strand Fliberglass, NOT BONDO!

While thats setting up, finish the lower hand hold...

Fun time...glue Recon #1 to #2. Yeah, this part is critical, if not aligned right it'll ruin the look or the gun. Me, I made a jig out of some wood so the 2 pieces fit togeather perfectly and then glued them. The scope site is just sitting the NOT attached yet...

Cut out this section in the side...

Make the pieces to fit there, but don't glue them in yet...

Dremel the hole for the flashlight, make a bracket to hold it inside the body, THEN glue everything down and fill the edges with fiberglass..

next....

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build

Now for the little finishing pieces...There's 2 on Nerf #1 and 4 for Nerf #2. If someone is seriously doing the build and needs a template for these I could maybe make one for download.

Just a trick but you might not know it...Lining up pieces it easyer with a guide. Tape holds it and then everything is corect in relation to the other pieces...

The clip feed is made of some 1/4" thick acrilic, angle is 14.5 degrees.

Now, as I said I think, my stock is a tad beefyer then the show props, this is how I joined the but plate to the arm. dowl rod, glued and then fiberglassed in place.

Scope is glued down, glazzing putty in all those nasty little pin holes, the entire prop is given a final sand with 800

Ta Da! Here's my Dad...ready to hunt Dino's!

So much for "it's just a cupple of Nerf guns glued togeather" !!!!!

Honestly, I have no idea why they put so much work into a prop....that's a Nerf gun. To me, it would have been so much more simple to just make something from scratch that no one has seen before.
Still, it makes it cool for us who want stuff like this!

If there's any questions, feel free to ask.

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build

YEAH! Great job! It doesn't really look like prop "replica", it's like watching prop master preparing for a show!

I can accept modded Nerf for a show, just not blatant repainted toy! I guess they had to use some cheaper toys because too many people are carrying a rifle, now that so many sixers showed up.

I have a new appreciation for the prop makers for the show now, that's a lot of work! Great job emulating it.

... G*d ... d*mn ...

That's a hell of a lot of very clean work to make a very nice replica.

What I previously considered rather lightly altered and repainted Frankenstein Nerf guns are clearly something more.

Congratulations! Great job!

Yup!

It's laughable that they are probably spending $2 million an episode and using such a well known toy as their main source for weapons.

Amazing build to the OP. Great work.

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build

Awesome build and tutorial, thanks very much for taking the time to do this, definitely going to have a try at this build myself.
One question I have to ask though is that I've looked all through the Tut but can't see any mention of the top magazine slot surround build (acrylic in the pics by the look of it), did I miss the construction of that or was it just never mentioned?

Thanks
