"Terra Nova" prop gun build
Hi all, thought I'd share what I finished up today. Well, not "Finished" exactly, still a few details to do but good enough to show you all.
Here's where I started... ![]() And here's where I ended up... ![]() Fun build and I documented it all, so if there's interest in learning how to make this, just ask

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
very nice, what did you use for the stock of the gun and the front part of the gun?

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
Whoa! That's darn close if not identical to the real prop. Need more pics, tutorials even better!
I've got my Recon collecting dust, maybe I can do something to it soon with your help. |

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
I believe the one in the OP is a recon cs-6.
edit: With modifications of course. Not all of it is from the out of box parts, I don't think? |

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
JohnyB's post shows a Recon with extras on it. The top part looks like the laser light doubled up and they added parts of the stock in other places.
Gregdoom's is the Longshot just painted black. I guess they need to save money. Best, DBCooper |

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
I'm all for the using modded toys for futuristic look. But a rifle prop with $25 toy and a can of spray paint is just lazy.

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
Not to distract from the original poster's build, your gun looks DAMN fine and it's very sharp replica, great job on it...
But... I was going to say the same thing about toys being used, seems more and more productions are simply repainting those damn NERF guns with minimal to no creativity involved in disguising them... Yeah the NERF guns look the part and looks cool but just the same, I wish studios would invest a little more creativity in the props painting an over the counter toy is as has been said "just lazy"... |

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
Sorry! sorry!, Got really tied up in the shop finishing up some props for All Hallows Eve.
As I'm new here, how many pictures can I post? There's a LOT of them for this build... |

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
I believe there are no images limit on the RPF... or I'm in big trouble.
![]() Your build is VERY cool, and I hope you'll forgive our little detour about nerf props. ![]() @exoray, check out Kevin Sorbo's Prardox (2010 dvd), he's holding a slightly modified and painted over nerf in the poster, didn't bother to watch the film though. I laughed at that when I saw it, and now look at the "most expensive TV show ever created". |

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
What I'd like to know is where the long part of the new stock comes from. That looks spot-on, and I have no idea what it is

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
I thought you would like some info on the prop guns built for TerraNova. There were five different types of gun made. As with all TV productions time and money are in short supply so the only option was to use nerf gun components combined with MDF, PVC pipe and lots of car bog. The guns that were just painted black were not made by props but bought by the art department for use as background only.
The type 1 gun that you have recreated, the stock was scratch built from PVC pipe sections, and the torch at the front was store bought. The masters were then cast in silicone and multiple urethane copies were made. Hope this helps |

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
I would take this show (which I find pretty damn decent thus far) more serious and would be more able to "lose" myself in the sci-fi of it all if all the soldiers didn't look like a bunch of weekend paintballers (obviously wearing paintball armor) with said painted nerf weapons. That said we need more shows like this on mainstream t.v.

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
OK everyone, here we go, hang on it gets a little rough...Hope I get the picture links right...
Some friends over at ScifiHero got the ball rolling with some discussion on it, and I was thinking "Hey, cupple of Nerf guns glued togeather...how hard could it be?..." So I started with two brand new Nerf Recons (yes, me and my dad shot at each other till we lost all the darts) and a few pictures of the prop from the show. De-logo'ing it, roughing in the sides of the "boxes", filling the hand grip, filling the bottom of the grip. ![]() Use the little loops of plastic at the bottom of the grip as a guide to sand it. ![]() ![]() "Short Strand Fiberglass" then a skimcoat of bondo. ![]() Medium sand done. Top slide is glued in place. I use Gorilla Glue, sets up like steel, only drawback is it sets FAST, like in 5 seconds that it, piece is welded where you have it. ![]() From photos I mesured the size of these "wings" from the known size of the top part of the gun. ![]() Cut out a piece the corect size and marked it for the angles, like so... ![]() From trial and error, I found the closet match was 15 degrees. ![]() Cut off or sand down the top rail, glass and bone in. ![]() That was day 1... |

Re: "Terra Nova" prop gun build
Impressive. Gorilla Glue is remarkable but I don't like that it has massive expansion capabilities that can really get messy. For this application though you've got a lot of room for spread so I bet it's fantastic. Great work.
