    May 21, 2007 - Sylar Watches... a discussion thread. #1

I found several places that specialize in custom logo watches... I'm trying to find one that closely emulates Sylar's watch, I thought it might be a fun discussion thread to start up here to see what you guys can help uncover.

    http://www.logowatches.com/
    http://www.garrettspecialties.com/watches-c-76.html
    http://www.watchimprints.com/classic.htm

And finally, as close to reference material as I have so far:
    http://heroeswiki.com/Sylar%27s_watch

    Anyone have any better resources?

Hmmm... I MIGHT be able to help you out! A couple of years ago I did some small runs of custom watches. I was training to become a watch maker, however switched to becoming a jeweler instead. I still have my tools to do this. The only thing is, I would need some one to create the file for the dial, my graphics guy isn't around any more. I charged around $35 for each, no min order. It all depended on the quality and cost of the watch that I used. I never did try to do one with the open date window, but shouldn't be a problem.

Here's some of the ones I did:

I think I can do the graphics for the dial, I just need to know what font was used on the original...

That looks similar to the US Army watch. It looks like there is a date area where the 3 is.

    I LOVE it!!!

wouldn't matter to me if it had the date or not for one I would wear everyday, but as a prop I'd love to see it accurate.

Utinni, you got anymore of those?

I assume you mean for SYLAR? I used Bauhaus than then made changes to it since it wasn't accurate on it's own.

If someone's going to do some custom watches the artwork is in vector and I can send it to them to use.

Nice find FB! That's definitely it. With a manufacturer list price of $245 it would be costly to use as a replica I imagine.

rhboyd, the watch is from the Heroes TV series.

I know this is somewhat of an odd sentiment for the RPF, but I think a "close enough" replica would satisfy me just fine. I am all for exploring the options that Utinni has available. $245 is a little steep for something I'd have to end up paying to have modified anyway. I was hoping that we could get these done in a price range that I could use a few for gifts.

Knowing the source watch as we do now (nice catch, btw), does that beg any modifications to the graphics for the dial? I really like what dr. slurpee put together!

I would hope we could find some suitably similar straps that would give the look of the Hamilton ones. I'll do some research after I get off work and see what I can find.

Great job so far, this may turn out to be a fun little project!

I know we're bordering on an interest thread now, but I agree that a real Hamilton would be a wasted on me. I think the watches in Utinni's pics would be great. Like I said I don't need or want the date either if that saves some bucks. I can NEVER get the day to read right, well maybe for like a month...2 months if it has 31 days

back to discussion...can anyone tell how the words "sylar" are put on there? Looks really good however they did it. Kudos to the Heroes prop guy, I know I went online shopping for "sylar" watches that evening

I agree that a close enough alternative that is cheaper would be cool for most people.

I would guess that they perhaps did some sort of rub down transfer to put the SYLAR onto the watch, or something like that.

As for making a lower cost alternative, what about including the date (the 2 as seen in my art and on Sylar's watch) as part of the art of the watch with a shadow and such? It'd never change so I suppose some people might be confused by the date, but that's their problem.

    Something like this.

Oh also, I already changed some of the position of the numbers and such based on a larger photo of the Hamilton watch.

Why not make the faux 'date' a '3', so at least it's arguably (visually) functional...?

It might be best to see what the cost would be for both the date and non-date options, I wouldn't mind having a functional date if that was possible.

Either way, this is a cool thread and I'm glad its starting to shape up. Now I'll get to hunting down some bands, unless Utinni has anything else up his watchmaking sleeve for that aspect.

Dr.S....I dig the idea of the mock date. seriously it would be as accurate as when I use the date function set it to 9 or something.

another thing, is the watch totally broken in the show? or is the crystal just cracked? could be a good reason to make the date not work :P

any ideas if simulating the cracked crystal would be worth it? I'm not even sure how tht could be done. Clear sticker overlay with the crack graphics?

I wore a cracked Citizen diving watch for years, but I doubt I'd have much success actually cracking the crystal.

Amish that certainly is a not too bad alternative, though there are inaccuracies that could bother some.

looking at the website it doesnt list what the face is made out of, but any watch face can be changed, it just takes little patience and the right tools. The hard part would be not to mess up the date wheel.

I am sure people here can easily do it though

Watch dials aren't exactly easy to swap out, specially on low end watches like the ones posted, dials on those are usually permanently attached to the movement via small pegs. The watch for the show may have had the dial professionally refinished, not a cheap option.

For the cheaper alternative, I had my dials printed on high quality sticker paper on a good quality photo printer. I remove the mechanism, removed the hands, correctly place the sticker, put the hands BACK ON (not an easy thing to do- push too hard and you can snap the pinion or bend/brake the hands) put the movement back into the case and reseal. So for the time and skill it's really NOT that bad for the price I was asking. It seems like my process is similar to one or 2 of the businesses above.

I'll look around near me and see if I can find any watches similar.
