    Sep 22, 2008 - Steampunk Cane project #1

Over the last few months I've been working on an upcoming production of Sweeney Todd that will draw heavily from steampunk elements for the design concept. My job (costume designer) is done now, so to keep myself from sitting around twiddling my thumbs, I decided to take on a project or two to keep myself busy. Something I really wanted for the show were some nice steampunky canes. The costume shop had enough to do already, so I figured I would try my hand at it. I spent a couple hours (and way too much money) sifting through pipe fittings at Lowe's and about an hour's work and TaDa!!!

What do ya'll think? I want to redo the middle connector on the right one with something brassy, so there's more contrast, but other than that, I'm happy with the results.

Kind of a bump since this got eaten by a high influx of traffic in the prop forum.

Anyone have any input? I think I want to make some more of these, each one an original of course.

Anyone have any steampunk canes they've made to share?

I kinda like the middle connector on the right one it kind off gives the impression that it can be dissasembled for traveling needs. I'd go for a brass knob on the head of the cane.

Add grips by wrapping leather around the tops!

The key to remember about a straight cane is you lean on the top so you need something you can palm pretty easy around 1.5-2" in diameter.

I have my great grandfather's cane from the teens and it's just oak with a brass tip and a brass knob on the top. The knob is about 2/3 the size of a regular doorknob.

    My $0.02 anyhow.

EDIT: Found an old pic where I used it in a costume to illustrate.

I think they still look too much like pipefittings from Lowes. You need an organic element, maybe wood, leather, or bone? I'd also stick to one metal -- brass or copper. I'd lose the nickel-colored metals completely. You could maybe patina the copper as well to take it away from the just-purchased look.

Just my two-cents! I hope you don't feel like I'm being too critical. I like the idea.

Hi Chris, here's a little stick-er I made years ago. I started with a bad bronze punisher knife pommel casting. One eye is fused shut, and the spru became the top-knot. Add a deer leg bone, and a broken fencing foil blade, and you have... The Mongolian!
Hollow out a pool cue, cut it down, drilled it out, and add some bronze fittings from a boat to make the walking stick / sheath. Shown next to a traditional gold topped cane from c1890.
    Cheers, Jeff
