    Jan 24, 2010 - Star Trek 4 Klingon Phaser #1

I was going through some stuff and came across these plans. They were drawn by Robert Coyle who originally designed the thing. I think it was back in the late '80's that I saw him at a small Arizona convention. He had one of these that he was carrying around the show. We got to talking and he kind enough to draw up some plans for me.

I will point out that the tip in this image below is how it appeared in the movie(as I understand it) and as you can see it is extended more. The 3 prong M16 tip as it appears above is as it was originally conceived....so take your pick. Also note in the image below the little box showing the fin detail. In the film the recessed edges were at an angle.

On the communicator and ST3 pistol disruptor you may recall the half spheres which I have always heard were explained as batteries. Robert told me he originally designed the rod on the bottom to have a ball on the end to sort of keep with the look the other props.

So there you are. The increments are in inches and it is a simpler shape so it should be a fun project for those who have the iniative.

I used to have number 8 of these made and images of that piece are on the web.

Some crappy old 35mm fixed pics I have of number 8(made by the same people who did the ones for the movie) that I used to own.

Very cool information, love the drawings.

Do you know whatever happened to your 8? I bet it was a cool piece to have.

There are direct from RACs son Robert with exception of the increments.

It was okay. It had a couple goofs that I couldn't get over.

First was the left fin. It's supposed to flare out as much as the right one and is didn't. You can see it in the top right picture of the photo montage I posted. See the red line in the drawing below to see what I'm talking about.

The rod on the bottom wasn't milled properly so it had an arc as illustrated here.

They were fairly basic goofs and I couldn't see past them so I sold it at a convention. Number 8 wasn't in the film but it was made by the same people who worked on the film. I made some adjustments to the paint job since I thought it could be better. One adjustment is that it has the 3 typical Klingon glyphs stenciled on the bottom. I still have that stencil.

No problem. It has a lot of the typical Klingon flat surfaces and basic shapes so it should be an easier build with rod, tube, and sheet plastic. Hope it gets someone onto doing their own project.
