Jul 1, 2009 - Specs please for pommel for Force Pike #1

Handwheel, sink knob, tap handle...

The part at the end of the lightsaber.

Can anyone take measurements please? A machinist is going to do one for me out of alloy. I need the measurements from the vintage one.

This guy has just finished a scratch built, full metal, E-11 ( trooper blaster ) His work is fantastic. So I've asked him to make me a force pike. The handwheel will go on the pommel.

Thanx, Niko.

There's a run of these happening shortly, if not already started here. That'd probably be the better way to go.

The end of the force pike is a completely different piece. It's not the same as the Obi-Wan pommel.

Jul 3, 2009 - Re: Specs please for the 'handwheel'/ pommel for Force Pike #9

A few questions from the maker -

1) Does anyone know what model tap handle it is? if it even is a tap handle.

2) does anyone know the dimensions of the said item?

3) It appears to have the shape of the old Chrystal handles you would see on old cupboards and dressers etc but now that I look at it more I'm led to believe it's part of the original deep sea fishing pole? I would love to hear some peoples thought on this!

Any ideas ?

Thanx.

Is this a run for the end-piece only or for the entire pike?

He did mention that he may do more........

This much I can say:
It's an original piece, not a found item.
The "fishing pole" is a theory, and in any case does not affect the hardware on the pike.
The pics shown give far more detail than the standee.

I don't know what it is, but it's definitely a found part.
It appears to be translucent colored and painted black.

Check out the bottom.

I'm working on a ROTJ royal guard right now and will eventually want to do the pike. Just not yet, not until the rest is done.

Custom made, based on my SUPER SECRET INSI.......observation of someone that's actually handled it.

Additionally, as that MOM pike does not match archive pieces, take with a grain of salt.

My guess is that your 'friend' didn't know the difference between the ROTJ pikes and the PT pikes (and yes they are totally different).

All the ROTJ pikes I've seen are the same.

Yes, they are not the same.
I'm also working from a picture, not others' eyes.
Anyhow.
The pikes do not have gears like the OWK hilt, it has facets.

From the 6' standee of old. This has been debated at great length on the Sovereign Protector's board, and the OWK pommel story is laid to rest.

I know that it has facets, you just couldn't see them that well in the first pic I posted.
Here's another where you can see them better.
I'm convinced it is a found part. It is a clear part (although cloudy clear) that has been painted over.

Couldn't see them at all(I'm sure that was a mistake!)
Yup, machine turned from a cloudy material(nylon, from the greasy look of it), then painted. Remember, there was actual money by the time ROTJ came around

The ROTJ props were still mostly found parts. The Luke ROTJ lightsaber being a rare exception. It was made late in production for closeups. The force pike hardly rates that level of attention.

I agree with Gino. It's most likely a found part.
That doesn't mean it's not machined nylon, just that they probably found it that way.

Possible, but importance aside; that Luke's pommel was custom-made implies that it wouldn't be the only thing done specially. Not very cost effective.
2" nylon rod, a decent CAD plan, and 5 minutes= a dozen of them are done. "Make us a knob for these spear things" is the only words you may hear during this project.
Can't really fathom something made of nylon used in regular applications; in a machine shop it becomes washers, O-rings, threaded tubes or screws. The reason is that it's tough, water resistant and SLICK. Paint doesn't cling all that well. BUT it is strong enough to turn, pretty cheap, and softer than metal which makes it fast to work with.
Also worth noting is that grips have steel tape on them instead of metal parts......hmm........
The entire black grip, from pommel to top may be a single piece.

Luke's saber was made by a different group (UK prop dept).
Most blasters were yet another prop department (Stembridge in the US).
Nothing was done is CAD. All machining was hand done.
The force pikes likely fell under ILM's domain during ROTJ and they would not spend any time constructing a piece like that. They would reach in a box of greeblies and find something about the right size and stick it on. As you said nylon would be a poor material to use purposefully.
Look at the Vibro-ax as a good example of the way they would approach something like the pike.
