Slothfurnace's ANH Luke Graflex Saber chassis. PICS, Step by step.

You do realize that the folks from Bapty Studio's just slammed those grips on without caring for exact alignment!?!

By the way would that be the Force flowing through your lightsaber which causes an electrical imbalance :confused

Hehe, the force, or a somewhat fizzled soundboard. I will replace the soundboard after Celebration V.

This is among, if not the, most profoundly creative and masterfully executed prop mods I've ever seen around here.

Stellar job and fantastic prop. Whether you decide to keep it or sell it, it's a lucky owner with a cool toy who has this piece! :thumbsup

I am utterly humbled by all the praise, I appreciate that quite a bit.

Stunning, i'm not a big fan of Star Wars [ducks for cover] but that really is a work of art.

Thanks!

Are you going to be ready for CV?

Enjoy your stay. Wish I could be there too ... but alas.

-Chaim

Yes, I think it's ready for primetime, if not perfect, it will still work to get signed by Hamill.

I so want to do some lightsaber builds but am a bit intimidated. I have been trying to pick up the parts though to just be able to sit and not worry about it.

Looks amazing!

Mark will be blown away by this!!!

Perhaps you could bring someone to film the event when you present your lightsaber to him for signing so we can all share the moment. He's a really nice bloke to approach. As a volunteer I got to meet him backstage at Celebration Europe in London. Take your time, there is probably going to be a long line and bring some extra cash too since his signature along with Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) were amongst the most expensive ... albeit that was back in 2007 before the credit crunch.

Mark LOVED it!

Going in, it was all morning in line to get it signed. I debated the whole way leading up to it whether to get the battery can or the plaque signed, and finally just decided to get the can signed.

The people at the door to the booth really liked the saber, and all convention it turned heads.. But the real joy was when Mark saw it.

He did a double take when my wife said I built it myself. He said it was so much better than what he had on the set, and told me about how the original one had metal tracks that cut his hands, and how uncomfortable it was to handle. He said mine was much more comfy, and really liked the inside, and how it lit up. He sat and talked to me for a few minutes about it and thanked me for bringing it.

I had paid for one signature, and when he was done talking to me about it he said, "Yeah, I tried getting it all on that round part" and I said, well, I had this plaque here if you couldn't, but that looks fine... and he said, "Here, I'll sign that too" and snatched it out of my hand and signed it and handed it back to me grinning, like he knew his handlers hated when he gives out free signatures.

He really was so gracious and nice, and a funny fellow. Unfortunately, they did not allow photography at the table, but I will never forget him shaking my hand and thanking me for bringing it for him to sign.

Now I have the battery can AND the plaque signed. He solved the debate on how to get it signed!

Congratulations!

I told you Mark's an easy guy to talk to and . . . you've got two signatures for the price of one he,he,he!!!

Now did he really say that the original lightsaber had and I quote "metal tracks" that cut his hands :confused

BTW Did you go see George at the Main Event on Saterday or were you waiting in line at the time?

Yes.. he specifically said the first one had metal t tracks that cut his hands... and they changed them to rubber for the second movie. My wife and I both thought that was interesting. I had heard they might have been metal at one point... it is interesting hearing it from him though.

The plaque is super cool! I wouldn't have had him sign the saber though. To me it cheapens it and takes away from your work.

Well, I disagree... I think it adds so much to it. That part of the can will usually be hidden by the back section of Graflex handle anway.

Here's a couple pics of it around C5, I have to edit some more pics when I get home, but these I liked..
Here it is next to the EFX Luke Reveal...

One of the guys at the EFX booth there saw me taking this pic and asked me to please put it down, hands off... he didn't realize I was holding my own saber next to theirs. The other fellow there, an engineer for EFX, didn't catch his name, almost didn't want to hand it back to me after I showed it to him. He started off saying, "We can't make this, it's too complicated. That's why we delayed the Obi, the casting molds were too expensive...."
This shot is the saber at the G4TV Hoth Ice Bar...

Which was a lot of fun.

Did you see anything else interesting at Celebration V?

And now exchange the 'CV replacement bubbles' for the correct rebelscum bubbles strip will you ... please.

-Chaim

Hi there,

Any more pictures from Celebration V? Did you replace the soundboard already and put the correct bubbles back? And how about a "Slothfurnace DIY Graflex Lightsaber Internal Metal and SFX Parts" KIT?

I do have some pics I need to edit and look over, but as far as a kit goes, I am afraid by the time I offered this as a kit, I'd have to go ahead and just sell the completed thing. There's more tiny parts in this thing than I can count, and I would probably have to charge so much for it that it would make more sense just to make a small run of these sabers and sell them as handmade complete units.

I do have the right bubble strip in this one now though, and I have got my blade LED string soldered up, the DIN plug adapter machined and threaded for the TCSS blade, diffuser foam and it's all wired up. I may have to cut my blade down an inch or two though, and I plan to do that Tuesday night (my sabersmith night)

The new Yoda Board seems to work great and I'll get the insulating issues that caused the first one to fry fixed for good before I reinstall it.

I also have begun sketching the display... This saber isn't quite done, and I haven't made pics the past few days because of work and travel, but I'll be back on it this week, so stay tuned.

He also said he didn't film the cave scene in ROTJ. Lol!
