Jun 13, 2012 - Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows Breathing Apparatus #1

    Hey guys/gals,
I've not made a prop before but have been seriously thinking about making this breather from sherlock holmes. Can anyone ID the parts right off? The gold mesh thing looks like a small strainer just painted then the mouth piece is probably just a mouth piece cut down (like one for sports) other than that im not sure. I tried to get it from as many angles as i could but they dont show off the bottom of it very well. Also i have screen grabs of the mousetrap bomb, sniper rifle, and wind gauge if anyone is interested. Those were about the only props that stood out other than maybe a handgun and of course the entire wardrobe! thanks again!

Hmmm, the roundy thing on the back looks like it could be from some sort of walkie-talkie or communicator thing. Maybe even an old intercom?

EDIT: Snapped some higher-res pictures of it.

Thanks for the better screen caps! Now that i look at it a little more it just looks like a brass pipe with different fittings on the top and bottom and the round piece looks alot like the top half of a microphone head. Any other thoughts? esp. on that side piece?

I was thinking the round thing was the top of one of those little sprinklers you can use to spot water your lawn/plants, but I can't find a good pic online to show what I mean. I think the large cylinder is supposed to act as an accordion (the rubber color is the same between the rings as the mouth piece, which to me would imply that it should squish/move...) to help breathing. But maybe not - it's been awhile since I've seen the movie and can't remember if he actually BREATHES with it on screen where we could see.

The accordion piece doesn't ever move in the film, but you can hear him breath through it in one scene without it moving at all. But a squishy action would be a nice thing to include. Although it isn't there in the film.

Just tried making a (bad) drawing of the breathing apparatus seen from the front, i think i'll try making a digital drawing later. Or maybe just use a ruler...

EDIT: This is a definite improvement.

Apropos moving things, there is also the tab on the right that needs to be able to turn atleast 90 degrees, it seems to have a sort of D shape. Should i try drawing another drawing seen from the side? Or aren't the drawings helpful at all.

The hemisphere looks painted, and could be part of a tea infuser. I like it, it looks like it could have come from "The Wild, Wild West" tv series. Although in the series, the bellows would have worked.

Harold the drawings are great if you wouldn't mind doing the other one then i'd like it.
Krel you might be onto something with tea infuser, I spent a couple hours yesterday looking at microphone tops, i thought maybe a little kids version or something. Then i looked at small strainers but the mesh on all of them were all too tight and too many holes. But i did find this that looks very similar:

    found this one too.
although the holes on the movie version look slightly square or is that just an artifact from the paint?
I think im going to lowes/home depot/hobby lobby this weekend to look for the brass parts, can anyone get the sizes of this thing? I know about how big it is but not exact.
also im glad this thread picked up!

also just noticed this in the photos, the line coming off the round thing looks like it could be a handle that comes with the infuser or strainer or whatever it is.

It defintly seems to be painted, you can see the paint is stuck in one of the holes, and it certainly seems to be slightly squared... I'm not 100% sure on the tea infuser bit though, if you look at it from the side, the holes go in a sort of bow around the edges of it.

This one isn't quite as good, but i tried drawing the Apparatus seen from the side, by the way, should we come up with some official names for the parts to avoid confusion?

So if its not a tea infuser do you think pwrofbauer is right with the water pitcher?

Edited the top picture, with names of pieces added, please inquire if you think there's better names (which there propably is). Also, excuse my ignorance, but what's a water pitcher? All i could find was water jugs when i googled it.

Square holes could mean plastic. We had a plastic strainer with square holes.

david thanks for the tip ! i looked at a few pages of presses but the roundness is never there ?
movie buff i think it is plastic also problem is that if i find one with square holes it isn't round enough if its round enough then it doesn't have teh square holes and the pattern is odd....
Could it be that this is a particular style in England because thats where the movie was filmed?

Yeah, what's with movie makers , don't they realize us prop geeks need 5 minutes of glamour shots from each angle so we can make these things? I like the electric prod from the first movie too. I may have to start looking for parts. Dollar stores have some sink strainers and things.
