SGU Destiny wall light sconce WIP

I managed to buy a Destiny wall light sconce cheaply from a member here and decided to have a go at making some vacuum formed replicas. Originals have made over $800:eek This is my first project so I was going to get these professionally vacuum formed but decided to build my own former instead. I used Smooth-On Rebound 25 for the mold then Plasti-paste for the support and Task-18 for the resin. Unfortunately the resin was too heavy for the shell and when I went to demold it I found the cast was bowed:facepalm I then decided to use plaster, 25 kilos of the stuff in fact. I thought it would be easier to get the pour level if the mold was the size of a huge brick.

I used Polycraft SG2000 liquid plastic this time, the casts came out really nice. While I was making the mold I was also building a vacuum former after looking at the X robots video on you tube. After the first pull I realised the plastic wasn't getting pulled in to the recesses enough so I made another cast but this had a core of pink foam which I removed when the cast was set. This made the cast hollow so that I could drill holes in the recessed areas of the mold so that the plastic would be pulled down.

I was hoping to make these in one piece but the painting would have been a nightmare and I wasn't happy about what it looked like so I made an inner shell by lining the mold with clay 2mm thick except for the lighted areas. This is the cast you can see in the first photo just taken from the mold.

This is a pic of the outer shell trimmed with a coat of black plastic primer with the inner next to it.

Tomorrow I am going to practice the paint and order some more plastic to try some different thickness's.
When I am happy with the result I will put an interest thread in the junk yard.

Really glad you didn't cast this as one piece. I wasn't looking forward to getting the painting right.

BTW: I'm sure there a better ways but I start with a layer of patina and paint over it.

I ordered some more plastic today and got a quote to get the backing plate CNC routed out of the correct 6mm plywood. I also painted the outer shell today, for my first ever prop painting attempt I am very happy with it. I used Plasti-kote fast dry enamel paints painted on to the matt black plastic paint. I first painted night blue with a 10mm brush, making sure the paintbrush was very lightly loaded and using random splodges and streaks. The next coat was copper but this time I used a small piece of sponge to dab it on, again only a very light coat. I painted a bit of cardboard then coated the sponge then dabbed it on a bit of paper until I got the right amount of paint. If you use a sponge make sure there are no straight edges or you will get lines on the piece your painting. The last coat was sky blue, again using the sponge but after a couple of minutes use a clean sponge to soften it. The last thing to do is use a very watery sky blue paint and apply in streaks and splodges to simulate water damage to the copper. I think I will add some dark Gray after the black coat next time. I also managed to make the back plate and painted it the same. Here are a few pics, the original is on the right.

This is an original prop not made by the member I got it from.
