Mar 4, 2009 - Sgt. Fang ANH Vader helmets finished! #1

After a couple months of work, I finally have my dream Vader! I love the beat up nasty lookin ANH, something so much more evil and diabolical about that look. I'm pretty pleased with how I captured it. The Sarge kits were great to work with, his stuff is always top notch! Finishes up beautifully! I had 2 of em to do up, one was for a friend who wanted a slightly different look, I'll explain that in a bit. Thought the best way to show if off properly was a pictorial of sorts! So I'll begin.

This is it fresh outta the box

After sanding, trimming, light bondo, primer, the base coat of black, and a wet sand

The dome with I think the 3rd coat of black, and the face plate with it's second coat of chrome. Both were wet sanded probably half a dozen times total

The first coat of sealer on the dome, after a wet sand, and the face plate with the black sections hand painted in, also wet sanded. It sat like this for a good month while the weather was brutal.

And finally, finished! Well, minus the lenses, I still need a pair.
The face plate, 2 tone chrome and black, with weathering and scuffing.

    and with the dome attached

And for fun, went with a black background for some more dramatic pics

My friend wanted a little cleaner darker look to his. So I did sharp lines, and a much darker gun metal

I like the darker gunmetal too. I just paid Sarge for a Vader helmet. I will get it done within 1 week (after I get it) and post photos here. I have all the parts on the way. I managed to get red lenses. And I might just paint the entire helmet black. I think the solid black, and the red lenses will give me the look I am going for. I saw a Ghost Host a few years back that was painted all black, and it looked fantastic.

Nice i think the gunmetal is a better colour, would be better brushed though.
Think it was Dann ? but someone did a buildup of one of these helmets here and narrowed the centre ridge, that made all the difference aswell.

Just a few things. First of really nice finish work on the paint, but you may want to go ever these areas:

The inside of the eye sockets should be black all the way around not just the bottoms, and stop just at the edge of the eyebrow.

The left side of the face should also not have the black stripe running the full length of the cheek. The black area should go from the nose to the edge of the cheek but not below the ledge onto the side.

Other than that it there are things like narrowing the dome ridge, etc that others have mentioned.

Great to see more Vader helmets out there!
