    Oct 26, 2008 - ROTJ Luke Saber Questions #1

Here's a question for all you ROTJ Saber experts out there.

When it comes to the two stunt sabers (aka the Luke/Obi Shared Stunt & The Version 2) how were the Graflex clamps modified? Were the 4 inner tabs bent up, or filed off to get the clamp to slide over the saber hilts?

Also was the extra holes drilled only into the shared stunt, or did the V2 have them as well? Does anyone know what their purpose was?

The tabs were filed off on both sabers. As to the extra holes, it has been presumed that they had something to do with wiering for the motor that was inside the stunt saber during ANH. As to the V2, it doesn't look from the pictures we have that the clamp had these extra holes. Just one piece of 1/2" chrome tape covering the graflex, and the V2 had a different lever used on the clamp, and during shooting it lost one of it's sidebars.

The aluminum tape which covers the graflex clamp entirely on the shared stunt may have been applied after filiming.

New question for anyone out there with an opinion: I finally dug out my box of D-Rings, and need to figure out which one would be best to use on my Stormpath Stunt. Here's what I've got. For referance, the one in the middle with the tab is the Tandy used on the ANH saber.

out of what you have showing there, I think the ANH d-ring is the closest match, size-wise...

The ANH ring is way too small. The one on the bottom right may be a little too large, but it's closest in size.

Bottom right is actually the closest in size that I have, which surprises me. However, it looks like I need one a tad smaller. The height of the arch is okay, but the length of the flat bottom is much too long.

    Thoughts?

yeah, actually seeing them on the saber like that, the ANH is way too small... you should contact pastor jedi - he made a bunch of triangle rings for a run, he could probably make you any size d-ring you'd like...

Yeah...I took those pics of the original. If you can match that height with a shorter bottom, you'll be good to go.

IIRC there was a search for these a few/many years back with no results.

what kind of wire is the D-ring made from? seems like it would be easy to make. i just bought a ROTJ stunt saber blank from stormpath so i will be buying or making one of my own soon.

All the ones I've seen are nickle/chrome plated steel.

It's 3mm steel wire, but as SaberFreak stated, they were chrome or nickel plated. However, going by the current tour photos of the Hero Saber (the triangular ring), that was just 3mm steel wire without any electroplating, thus it's bad oxidation.
