IIRC it is the same kit, but the electric motor is not present.
You'll need the vintage kit for a few of the parts.

    Thanks for replies guys

I might still pick one up as a curio but the parts I'm looking for are part #84 Distributer Retainer and #98 Motor coil plate for my gestating blaster project.

    Cheers

I remember this kit when I was younger. There seemed to be a major design flaw with the finished product though, the electric motor seemed to provide too much torque for the plastic parts to handle. The cam shaft eventually broke because of this. Probably why the motor was removed in later releases of the kit. There was also a problem with the plastic parts getting snagged - particularly the pistons - even after sanding with high-grit paper, using a buffing wheel with a dremmel and dousing the thing in plastic-friendly oil, it still had a tendency to get hung up in various places, which probably also contributed to the cam shaft problem. Great idea, but bad execution, IMHO.

I've heard of this kit being used for parts, but what props/models exactly are the parts used for?

    Here's the V8 parts list:

    http://www.partsofsw.com/v8parts.htm

This list isn't quite complete, but shows most of the parts used on the major props. The kit was first used in ESB and a lot of parts show up in ROTJ as well.

It seems the parts not issued in the new kit are #92,97 and 98. Everything else seems to be there and the numbers match up from the old kit. I think the price was around $35.00 after the coupon discount.

    Here is a link.
