    Jul 10, 2012 - resin sweat #1

i'm having a few issues with the last 30% of a gallon of smoothcast 320, its about 8 months old, so probably in the 'old' criteria,
but its producing a lot of sweating parts, kind of randomly too,
shaking up the jugs tend to help, but with a sweaty piece, is there any way to repair that fast? like applying bondo dust or something? or if something is sweating, is it a duff prop?

A sweating cast is nothing but trash since it will never take paint. And you should shake the jugs well before you pour every time, not just near the end. The resin probably settled and separated and what you're pouring now will likely never have the right ratios of materials.

If its really bad theres nothing you can do really.

However on a mildly weepy prop, some people have good luck by baking the part out. you can wrap the part in a paper towel and put the thing somewhere hot, the towel will wick away the oils as they come out. This is often more trouble than its worth though.

If there is sediment in your resin toss it... anything you make with it will weep, dont waste your time just get new resin.

This is why I never use SMOOTH ON.

You can try baking it in the oven on low heat,...or put it in the sun for...a year.

Otherwise, yeah its pretty much trash.

Its not just Smooth On but many vendors can be victim to materials within their shelf life as they have to trust what the manufacturer sends them. Ive seen first hand old materials shipped to vendors and up to date materials go to others. On a side note I have some materials that are four years old and still pull parts from it. Weird I know but various materials have various shelf lives.

Next time you might want to try Smooth On's Onyx resin. It's a different formula altogether and doesn't seem to suffer from sweating the way white resin does. Also a plus is that it doesn't contain mercury and give off toxic vapors so it's much safer to use.

I've used both Onyx Slow and Fast and have had them both sweat. The MSDS says they both give off vapors as well.

While you should shake all resins before using, I find it especially important with Onyx. I've pulled more sweaty Onyx pieces than any other resin. And all have been my fault for not shaking.

Wow, that is honestly surprising as I have never had a bad piece come out with Onyx. I've always found it to be very forgiving. Even my interns were getting great casts with it.
