May 29, 2012 - resin and plastic micxing warping #1

    Hi Guys
I'm looking at doing a conversion on a disguise mjolnir like Kevin did (very inspiring thread if you have had a look) as it a fairly cheap option to get a nice looking hammer
    http://www.therpf.com/f9/disguise-th...pgrade-139073/

My question is to add some weight to the head of the mjolnir, I was thinking of using some casting resin I had left over. I know when I've used this stuff before it has gotten pretty hot in temperture. And I was wondering would the temperture of the resin cause the head of the hammer to warp at all? or would it be safer to you a box techque like Kevin did ??

    Thanks Chris

I'd pour it in layers to avoid any excessive exotherm generated by the chemical reaction.
You won't need a box because the resin dosen't expand like foam.
Depending on how much you're going to pour at once you may want to consider putting it in a container with some water to help dissipate the heat.

You can also cut the resin 50/50 with DRY sand so that it weighs more... You are not overly concerned about resin integrity since it's just a ballast so that high sand content shouldn't be a concern...

Water is a good idea to keep it cool, I suggest just wrapping it with soaking wet towels and keeping them wet vs dunking it in a tank of water...

I am glad you asked this question because I had to pick up a disguise hammer today after all these great Thor threads.

why wrap it in towels not dunk it?? thanks for the sand advise that will be better then the pure resin idea and I didn't think id have enough resin

Because it will act as a 'bobber' or 'float' you will be fighting to keeping it under water... Second depending on the rigidity of the plastic the pressure of the water might cause the same effect you are trying to avoid, but instead of expanding out it might crush it in...
