    Aug 10, 2012 - Raiders Bullwhip? #1

I've been looking around for awhile now and haven't seen very many people that have braided their own whip, let alone replicated any from the Indiana Jones movies (Other than Adam Savage). I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction, or at least post a few pictures of one that you've done. Thanks.

You mean other than David Morgan? Are you looking more for home made?

Whips are not easy to do which is why few have done them.

There are a few members here that have and I am sure they will post when they see this

Some years back, a member here posted a tutorial for constructing [nylon] bullwhips.

I ended up building one as a practice run, & a second one that I would try to make my best effort. The first one was ~OK~, but I was/am very happy with the second one.

I will say that it was one of the most tedious, laborious tasks I've ever undertaken, & afterwards, it took 3 weeks for my hands to recover completely. I haven't had the time for another attempt:

My original intention was to use the experience to later build myself an Indy whip. However, RPF'er 'classicbullwhips' makes an Indy whip that is so nice, that I couldn't resist picking one up.

Like apollo said, they're not easy to make, so you've definitely got to admire those among us who are skilled, (and patient) enough to even attempt such a task. (Speaking of which, nice work on your bullwhip Nexus6. It came out great! )

I myself however, (being entirely skill-less as well as incredibly impatient), ended up buying a 10ft. David Morgan back in 2005 before he stopped making them by hand himself, and it's one of my most cherished props. I'd wanted an Indy whip ever since Raiders of the Lost Ark came out when I was 10 years old, so this was a life-long dream of mine. Although he shortened the length of the handle in later years, (to make the whips sturdier and more durable), it's essentially the same bullwhip as the one that I saw on the screen at the Drive-In Theater all those years ago, and I couldn't be happier with it. (It's ridiculous how impressionable kids are, huh?)

Indy's Bullwhip (David Morgan No. 455) other replicas movie props from Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

Nope, I own the same great whip and as a kid made one out of a length of rope and a heavy duty piece of electrical wire.
What is ridiculous and amazing that I still have both eyes.

Thanks for those pictures Nexus6. The original posts had been deleted form that thread. I may have a go at a nylon one just for fun. And Adam C, wow. That truly is amazing. Just wish I had the money for something like that.

Adam C, all you need is a letter from Kit West and you could pocket a cool $45k.

LXS, I recommend two things: check out the book "How to Make Whips" by Ron Edwards and join Club Obi Wan, where you will find much information on Indy whips. Club Obi Wan - Indiana Jones Discussion Forum, Fedora, Jacket, Whips, Gear • Index page

And Nexus6, holy cow! That's impressive.

MFP 2020, it wouldn't surprise me if there were people out there who've attempted stuff like that in the past. You've gotta wonder about some people, ya know?

Whoa! I thought that I was the only one insane enough to make a bullwhip out of an electrical cord! I remember cutting off the ''pronged'' end and fraying the wires inside to resemble a makeshift tassle/cracker. I'm afraid my poor younger brother still has a scar or two to this very day because of it. Oh well...kids will be kids, right?

Vintage Morgans go for big money now.

I have been offered a lot for my first Morgan which I bought in 1982

I had a replica made for me a few years ago by a pro whip maker. I basically got him to match a particular screen used whip from auction photos and he did an incredible job. Wish I could remember his name!

Holy crap! That's insane!!! Especially since it looks like a whip that was made wa-a-a-y after ''Raiders'', (or even ''Temple of Doom'' for that matter), was even filmed! (At least to me anyways.) I would be very surprised if it actually sells for that much. Thanks for the heads-up man. Very interesting.

DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FROM E-BAY AUCTION:

Bullwhip seen in Steven Spielberg's 1981 smash hit film ''Raiders of the Lost Ark.'' Harrison Ford and his stunt doubles used the whip in character as the film's beloved hero, Indiana Jones. ''Raiders of the Lost Ark'' sparked an entire entertainment franchise, and the inclusion of the whip in the plot single-handedly caused a spike in the number of hobbyists involved in the sport of recreational whip-cracking. Provenance includes a letter signed by Kit West, Special Effects Supervisor for the film on Kit West Productions letterhead confirming it was ''...used during the filming of 'Raiders' by Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and his stunt doubles for the action and stunt sequences.'' This 12-plait leather bullwhip was crafted for the production by leather-work design house David Morgan. Traditionally made of kangaroo hide, bullwhips produced by David Morgan during the 7-year ban on kangaroo leather, including this whip, are made of calf skin. Weighted handle features a plaited wrist-loop. Measures 117.5'' plus 26'' fall to an overall size of 143.5''. Expected wear to leather from usage. In near fine condition.

Yeah it looks like a late 90's- 2000 Morgan.

No way was that production used on "Raiders"

all of the pertinent information in that thread was quoted and the last time I checked, even the pictures still worked
Don't look for the original posts, look for the quotes.
