Proton Pack build for Halloween 2014!

Hey folks!

I decided to start building my 2014 halloween costume which will be none other that a GHOSTBUSTER!

Im starting this thread in hopes of acquiring PEP FILES for the proton pack and trap. as some of you know, i work mostly with steel and aluminum on my props, and i plan to make as close of a replica as possible while posting many detailed pics along the way.

Any help that anyone could give me with pep files and or tips for building this will be MUCH appreciated. stay tuned for some Quick "balls to the wall" production of this project!

If you're only starting now, your best bet would be to get a ready-made shell if you want to be done in time for Halloween.

I did check into those on here and on eBay just for a quick/easy route, but I don't really want to spend that much money on the pack itself before buying the light/sound kit.

Basically I just need the overall dimensions and correct sizes for everything, and then I'll be building it from scratch with aluminum, steel, and fiberglass. I have a full welding/fabricating/machine shop to build it at a fast rate, so I should have no problem completing it before Halloween.

Not to mention my sleep schedule is every other night, so I should have plenty of time lol.

Ebay is the absolute worst place to look for proton pack parts. I HIGHLY suggest you go check out the store and for sale forum over at GBFans.com. The folks over there are very helpful and quite friendly. You can find absolutely everything you will need.

As for starting now for halloween, I wish you the best of luck. It took me six months to build my pack and others have taken longer. I can't wait to see some pictures when you get it done.

Hey mate, not sure if any one has recommended these yet but i have been using them to scratch build my pack outta mdf and they are super detailed and accurate, not pep files but very helpful.

Full credit goes to Stefan, these are amazing..

Having a great time building my pack, your in for good time if you have all that gear at your disposal..

And yes i totally agree with robpenfold the folks over at gbfans are awesome, bought a bunch of stuff from the shop and got it here in Australia in a week (thats fast f.y.i haha) and very fairly priced to..

There was a list of the different lengths and thicknesses of the various aluminum tubes used for a "hero" pack on GBfans somewhere. If I find it I'll post it here.

Wow thanks everyone, I REALLY appreciate the help all of you contributed. I think I'm good to go and ready to get rolling on this project and can't wait to hear everyones input on my work.
Keep your eyes out for some progress pics that I'll be posting very soon! Thanks again everybody!

Just a heads up, the closer we get to halloween the harder some of the parts will be to get.

Also look into the studio creation plastic shell. you can pick one up for under $100

I just got one of those plastic shells, I think it was $89 with shipping. I've got a lot of work to do on it to get it ready by halloween also.

Just a piece of advice; reinforce that Studio Creations shell. Once you add all the parts (i.e. ion arm, injector tubes, N-Filter, bumper etc.) not to mention the proton gun, that is a lot of weight on that plastic. Most folks are reinforced that shell by layering up some fiberglass on the inside or epoxying some sheet aluminum on the inside surfaces where parts will be mounted. Bolting parts is much more secure than gluing.

Good luck with the build. Can't wait to see some progress pictures. Ask any questions if you've got them. I had lots of help when I built my pack and I'd happily pay-it-forward if I can.

Thanks! I'm using a lot of 3d printed parts so that should cut down on the weight but I like the idea of using fiberglass on the side, I really want this thing to be durable and last a long time. My five year old daughter is crazy about GB like her old man so I'd love to see this passed down.
I'll do the electronics myself, I'll probably use an ATtiny or maybe just an arduino micro controller for the cyclotron and stepper lights as well as play the sound. For the moment I am going to use my matty collector proton thrower that I got myself last Christmas but ultimately I want to build my own with buttons and switches to interface directly to the micro controller in the pack.

What to you recommend for filling out the studio creation shells on the outside, bondo? Apoxysculpt?
Do you recommend using wood or an aluminium motherboard?

There are premade electronics kits that are simple and cost effective. I have Spongeface's light kits for my proton gun and pack and they all work with his amplified sound card. They are all controlled from the the switches on the proton gun. Pretty impressive kit IMO.

I'll check it out, if they aren't expensive I might go that route. I had seen some people selling these as "kits" on ebay for obscene amounts of money so thought I would just build my own on the cheap but if I can get one that is inexpensive then that would save me valuable time.

Anyway mrjbarl1 I don't want to hijack your thread! Please keep us posted, I too could use the help. :)

Haha no worries, everyone is more than welcome to talk to each other on this thread. Personally I think it's actually more helpful to see other routes and ideas to Guide a build. So talk away! Lol
