Jun 5, 2012 - Prop Resin Casting Question For The Experts... #1

I'm molding & casting a scratch Trek prop replica soon, these are the best materials according to my research-

Smooth On ReoFlex 30 for the mold & Smooth-Cast 305 for the cast.

I've had extensive experience with plaster & latex molds & casts, but my resin experience is limited to small clear castings.Any input would be EXTREMELY welcome.

For serious parts on our resin E-11 Blasters; magazines, Scopes & Hengstlers

"Alumilite" Quick-set RTV for the mold & Aalumilite Low Viscosity - Super Light liquid casting plastic.

+It sets HARD and gets all the tiny little details.
+De-molds in 30 minutes, but I usually let them set 1 hour.
+TUFF stuff, I've droped pieces on concreat and they were fine.
+NEVER have any problems with bubbles.

-Cup time is a tad above 1 minute...I don't care WHAT "they" say, I pour this stuff every day and that's what it REALLY is. 30 secound stir, 30 secound pour.

I'd go with silicone instead of the Reoflex. Casting urethane into a urethane mold will require using generous release.

Based on my experience with Smoothcast 305, I'd say stay away from it. It was one hell of a moody resin. Too unpredictable.

Smoothcast 300, on the other hand, is the best resin I've used, and it is one of the industry's favorite. I've used it for 8 years, and I'm very happy with it,
