    May 29, 2009 - Prop observations from Trek XI - - spoilers possible #1

Mods... if this should go in OT I will not mind... anyway...

So I just watched this movie again and thought I would post my prop observations for discussion...

    * The kelvin Comms made the old school TOS chirp sound I think
    * When Kirk is on Delta Vega and opens the tricorder I'm pretty sure it made
the comm chirp instead of the tric sound... am I right?
    * McCoy never touches a "tricorder"... instead he uses some white device which
I'm convinced is a found item. Same item that is used by a female when
Kirk, Spock, and Pike return to the Enterprise.
    * When Spock activates his phaser while on the transporter pad, he does
NOT touch the top of it but it still makes the power up sound. Looked to
me like he touched the "barrel rotate button"
*Was that the Slusho graphic on the big marquee sign for the bar right before
Kirk gets his butt OWNED by a cupcake?

Anybody else? Prop only discussion please.

Pretty sure I heard that too and thought "Huh?".

I've seen the movie twice and tried to pay attention to this more the 2nd time.

I thought I heard the "new beep" on the Kelvin comm when she flipped it open, not the old-style chirp.

I thought Spock DID activate switch on top of phaser, but I'm not as certain about this one.

I don't recall Kirk's tricorder making chirp noise, but I also don't recall seeing McCoy use the regular tricorder but only the white thing.

I also noticed last night that the phaser sound on the toy is not EVEN close to what's used in the film! The film phasers have a more "warbly" sound to them... almost like a vibrating saw blade.

I also noticed the Phasers "recoil" for lack of a better word. It happens so fast it's hard to say exactly what they do but I'm getting the impression of a recoil. Either that or everytime it fires the barrel rotates and that wouldn't make any sense. When Spock & Kirk are on the Romulan ship and Kirk is covering Spock you can see some kind of movement during firing.

What bugged me about the communicators was how they were (or weren't) used. The only time we see anyone use a communicator is on the Kelvin. Kirk doesn't use his communicator when he is on the drill head with Sulu. Instead he shouts into the air a la next generation style. These irked me a bit. Seems the guy on the Kelvin should have been the one to be shouting into the air, you know inner ship comm system, and Kirk should have been using the communicator being planet side.

Also, does anyone else feel the lack of beauty shots of any of the props was a deliberate snub at the prop building fans, ie. us?

Kirk had a communicator built in to the wrist of his sky diving uniform.

Spock had one in hand when he called the Enterprise to beam him and his Mommy up.

Probably. The waitress mentions Slusho when naming off some drinks.

As far as I can tell it made the extended chirp sound similar to some of the toy comms out there. I'll watch a few youtube vids and check back in.

The white tricorder is NOT a found item, it was made by the HMS guys specifically for the film.

You gotta admitt it's easy to think that... looks like one of those handheld games you get for like 10 bucks... but I'd seriously LOVE to see the prop!

you were right about the tricorder making the communicator sounds when Kirk was on the snow planet. That was one of peeves when I saw the movie opening weekend.

Maybe it was because Kirk was recording a diary entry?

When Scotty & Kirk beam aboard Enterprise, the vat of water Scotty materializes in is covered in that black leachline that was used all over Voyager.

To me (during 1st viewing) it popped out like a sore thumb.

If we were to be kind to the movie makers on the Tricorder chirp, we could rationalize that since Kirk was making a log entry into the tric he likely selected the function to pick up and record voice - maybe the 'comm' chirp is actually a tone that signals ready to pick up voice whether from a comm, tricorder, or any device in the ST supply locker.

But then again, I seriously doubt that much thought was put into the choice of the SFX for that very brief shot.

noticed a few more things tonight.
First, I noticed my first big prop glitch... Near the end when Kirk and Spock are on Nero's ship... right after spock leaves in the jellyfish ship... They show Kirk walking slowly through a very dimly lit tunnel. If you watch he's carrying one of the Romulan phasers. Then when he clears the tunnel and they cut to a different angle, he's got his starfleet phaser back.
Next, In the space jump scene. In realtime the red suit is ahead of Kirk and Sulu as they are falling... but on the Enterprise display screen his red blip is in the back of the line, behind every one else. Also, Sulu pulls his chute first, and kirk second... but Kirk lands first... WAAAAYYYY first! Maybe he's just that fat?!

Also got a neat thought. When Scotty and Kirk get trans-warp-beamed... I know the water tubes were clear for comic value... but also, maybe it was a nod to "Transparent Aluminum"?
Also... I'm fairly certain I heard some references to Piccard sayings...can't remember what now though... I'm going to have to take notes next time!

I also noticed that Scotty appears to be wearing a Tokyo Flash "Barcode" watch. If you guys haven't checked out their collection you got to... neat stuff. Sorry I don't have a pic though.

Who knows... maybe I'll see it again and catch more stuff!

That's actually how parachutes work- the first one to open will also be the first to slow down, and be passed by anyone who's still freefalling. It's just like hitting the brakes.
