Jul 3, 2010 - Prop Displays - How do you do your Detolf? #1

I know there's a ton of threads on here on different people's displays, but I was thinking something more specific for everyone's favorite display cabinet could be helpful. Mostly because I'm tired of looking at 10,000 different threads for pictures

I got one last summer, and I am just now getting around to putting stuff in it (stupid school getting in the way).

I have some ideas on how I want to do it, but also wondering how other people have their stuff situated.

Here is the one shelf I have right now, thats Firefly stuff. There is some empty space that I have to put some more small stuff in (Ariel IDs, a PAL, maybe some GRENADES would be nice) once I get them (wink wink). I'm not 100% sold though, seems kind of blah to me...

I dunno if its the blue wall or what, but something just seems off...

The other 3 shelves are going to be LOTR, POTC, and probably SW, though I might switch that to Harry Potter once I have some stuff to display...

So, how do you do your Detolf?

I built my own cabinets in that style. The back is an off white color which I think helps instead of an actual color the other thing you might want to do is make some displays to create different heights on your shelf. They don't have to be elaborate, just a few simple ones to create different heights. I even cut up small acrylic tubes to stand up cards and such.

    Just a few ideas

I just buy wooden bases at the craft shop and find ways of mounting the things.

Here are my 3 with my Indy collection (Still re-working the CoC shelf as I just received Relic Makers beautiful version!)

    One 'level' for each movie

Maybe you could find some pre-cut and sized mirrors at the craft store that would be just the right size to go behind inside the unit on each shelf. You could use some 3M double sided adhesive to attach them.

The main problem that I personally have with glass cabinets is that the Detolf levels are pretty high.

Subdividing the vertical direction is what often helps. In your case I think that a styrofoam head for the woolen hat might help a bit, propped up on a box with one ! of the shirts laid over. The two shirts neatly stacked in a corner and the gun in the middle of the bottom of that level, about where it is now, and the cards and coins casually put in front of that. Makes it look a bit like Jayne΄s locker

I mostly like what Arlington Beech has done with his Detolfs.

These things are great display cases, but how do you keep dust from still getting in there?

It depends on how you display your items in them. I have seen some that look like little glass cubicals and I have seen some that are really cool prop displays.

I have also seen people just lay their props out on an open shelf. And again, sometimes it looks messy and sometimes it looks really cool.

I always tried to display my props the way that "Planet Hollywood" does. I always liked the feeling they had with their displays.

For my detolf, I used some 1/24 scale acrylic display cases as stands as they were much sturdier and cheaper than acrylic stands. I've seen some people use the acrylic covers as stands to prop up their cases, but I didn't want the covers to have little feet markings.

I've been looking for the standing display cases like Arlington Beech and rabbit4x have. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to purchase one?

They are from Ikea and are called "Detolf." If you don't have one nearby, shipping costs like $200-300 for a $60 case.

Montager - I knew I had seen that LOTR cube before... Its one of my favorites (and I was thinking of putting my Sting in like that too, but I also have a scabbard for it)

I guess one thing that's also intimidating me, is that I like leaving room for growth (and there is stuff I want that I don't have yet). So anything I put together is still going to be incomplete. Thats just what I get, I guess.

    Keep 'em coming!

    Thanks.

The Sting scabbard is kind of covered up because of the angle that I took the picture, but standing in front of the cabinet looking in, it's very visible.

I have a ton of LOTR stuff (swords, axes, helmets, etc.) that I will be displaying on a wall, but I figured I would do a "Bag-End" Detlof shelf so that I would be forced to limit the amount of stuff and actually get it done.

Actually, here is what the display looked like years ago when I first put it together. As you can see, it has changed dramatically over the years, and heck, I started with a regular Sting, and it was replaced with the Museum Collection version.

Great displays everyone, cant get enough of checking out others prop collections. If there isnt a site dedicated to just entire collections, there should be.
Ive got three detolfs and luv em. Heres my first Blade Runner one, the second one is also Blade Runner props and the third is for my Mad Max
    collection, both unfinished.

Thanks! I know there is one within 3 hours of me near my sister. Maybe I can convince her to pick one up for me.

I love the displays. Someday I'll take a photo / vid of mine. (I think video is a great way to do it since rooms can be so hard to take a good full photo of.
