Re: Portal Companion Cube <3

I just thought of something for those with limited space.
I noticed I have a 15"x15"x 15" storage cube that has a door on it.
Like this but in white.

One could build up the detail parts that could then be molded and cast or even vac formed than added to these cubes and since they are small storage cubes could be used as such in a stacked form.

Just a thought.

So, I was going a little vanity search on google and found this thread. Since I'm a member here I thought I would post in this thread. I'm the guy who did the companion cube sub woofer.

I have a series of posts on my blog to show off the process. Here are the links in order.

Mods and Ends » Blog Archive » Secret Project Revealed!
Mods and Ends » Blog Archive » . . .and the Cube Goes On
Mods and Ends » Blog Archive » Another Update to the Companion Cube Subwoofer

Mods and Ends » Blog Archive » Portal Speakers: Part 2. This one is going to be difficult.
Mods and Ends » Blog Archive » I hate you GlaDos.

Also, it was mentioned on G4. Here's a link to my brother's site with the vid even though I don't like that channel. Companion Cube Sub Woofer on G4 - Way To Go Daniel! - I hereby decree - by David LeMieux

Anyway, good luck all building one. Mine's only ~14", but it's plenty big for my tiny place.

I finally got around to filling and smoothing the smaller 3D-printed cube. I also bought a starter resin casting kit, and made a simple one-piece rubber mold.

Each of the cubes measures a little less than 1 inch on a side.

You should totally link those with a small chain and sell them like those fluffy dices on rear mirrors.

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3

I could use a small one to put on the corner of my desk at work, and see how many people get it.

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3

I was thinking, I could probably just make some really simple bits like the corner pieces that I could cast and sell as a kit for different scales. That would be pretty easy. First I have to get enough posts.

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3

Hi guys,

I'm trying to model die part for vacforming of one side of the cube.
I have no experience in vacforming at all, so here's my question:
what form of mold is more effective in this case? Concave (on the left) or convex (on the right)?

Thanks in advance!

Portal Companion Cube - another one =)

Hi,

If you are bored, or just have an itch to build something, but have no materials and lazy enough to build something big - try this. It is really easy build, and costs me only 6 bucks.
This is paper only build - no need fiberglass, bondo and other toxic stuff.
I scaled model to have largest parts fit to A4 paper, so it is largest possible cube you can build without overlapping parts.

Well, now my kid is happy again =) She is real Portal addict, yes.

(Press on pictures to enlarge)

If you go with your own cube - download that ZIP file, containing PDO and PDFs.

Since I hasn't even dense paper, I went to little company that gives printing services to public and ask to print me a PDO file I have on most dense paper they have. I ask ti print 6 first pages on pink paper, and rest - on white.
I used file, where additional flaps present and no edge ID numbers.

And then...

Base cube:

Corners on base cube:

Next level of corners =)

12 PITA details between corners:

Here they are all on places:

Round thingies with hearts:

Glue them together:

And finally the new Weighted Companion Cube was born...

And... after 1 minute of playing with it, my kid sent it onto her shelf - to accompany older cube, that collect the dust there for almost an year...

Good luck with your builds!
