Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
Did we all agree on a size ? Matilda should be able to handle a three foot by three foot by three foot mold , witch means the cube would have to be at least 4" smaller. I can't do it on the vacuum press , I'd have to charge over 300 bucks a kit. If we can all agree on a size , that would be a big help. I should be able to produce a kit at 28" for around 50 bucks a pop but the shipping would be insane, If I did it all in one piece.
I can work that out later, Let's all agree on how big she is first. From what I've seen , I think the girl in the game is under 5 feet tall and I estimate the cube to be about 26" on each side. Every one else please enter your opinion and If anyone knows someone that might know the real world dimensions please do us all a favor and post here. |

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
Well, I for one would prefer a 12 in. version to go on a bookcase or something. I just don't have room for a 26 in. cube!

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
As I would love to have a 1:1 version, I have to agree with Sycor, I don't have the room! A 12 in. version would be perfect!

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
I'd like the 1:1, but shipping to Holland would be $$$. Can a kit be made into panels? And from there even smaller bits?
Or... Just produce the odd bits so we can make the big panels outta MDF or whatever sheet/plate material. Cheers for even considering a kit! |

OMG that is a great Idea This way it would only be three mollds , I still can't do it on the vacuum press , so the parts would still be big and hard to package , so shipping would still be crazy. Maybe I can work something out after I build the mock up ? Does anyone Know how big the cube is ? |

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
I think that each corner is a 12" cube with a .25" gap between.
The detail pieces could be scaled to that. Don't hold me to this, it just looks right to me. Scot |

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
After three hours the closest I can find is .62 meters. I think that is just over 20" that makes the girl in the game very short, I find small women very hot

BTW, Portal 2 is presenting a newer design to the Companion Cube. You can spot it a few times in these demo videos: YouTube - Portal 2 Demo (Part 1) - E3 2010

Should I start a pole thread ? to get more input ? I really think it's 28" , I'd be willing to go as small as 26" , but I need to know what others think, I wish more people would chime in here. |

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
> Well why are people all over the net saying it's .62 meters ?
Hmmm...what did these people use as their source to come up with 0.62 meters? Another cube thread mentioned something about a program that can extract models from Valve games. I made my model strictly by eyeball - it would be interesting to have the extracted cube model to compare. Mine's off in at least a few places, I think. I don't know if anyone knows how tall Chell is. There are pictures of the cube next to a cake, though, and I'm betting that round cakes tend to be made in certain diameters. (NOTE: A little research found round cake pans made in just about every inch diameter.) I guess maraschino cherries are a pretty standard size, we could compare against them. I seem to remember a commode in Chell's living quarters. US commodes are probably pretty standard in size (of course, it could be a special, non-standard Aperture Science commode), so maybe these models could be compared to determine the size of the Weighted Companion Cube. Are there any other "real world" items in Portal that could be used to determine the size? |

So for example the corner bit. One master, one side with ONE beveled side cut off, and finally the last one with two beveled sides cut off. Does that make sense to you? That way, only a few masters are needed, but you'd have to cut some edges afterwards, or make new masters from those. I wouldn't have a problem getting just all maste pieces and cutting them up myself. Big advantage would also be flat parts. I think that's what the guy did with the MDF as well. ;-) Give it a thought. Cheers! |

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
Right off the game, the ripped-off 3D model is roughly 39 centimeters cube. I'm not sure if that help you guys anyway.
![]() To me, it's way bigger, something between 0.5 and 1 meter. |

29 hours in a stereolithography machine (which was done for me as a favor from a good friend, so there's no way I can have more of these made in this way) produced the following:

Re: Portal Companion Cube <3
Here's a shot with the Companion Cube and the Barney model imported in the same project.
If Barney is 180cm tall, that makes the cube almost a meter, so something like 39" (so a big square in the editor must be 10").
