Like many others, I found this project by way of the Fallout fan film, "Nuka Break". Its been fascinating to read through the progress, and I can't wait to see how it develops from here. I'd love to throw my hat into the "3rd Run interest group" list.

Sorry, I wanted to offer some praise for the project and mention my interest as Skruffy had previously mentioned he's developing a "list" from posters who express interest. I fully intend to keep any further mention of it to an email or PM.

Wow this looks awesome and I'll definitely want one or two when I'm not on such a tight budget. Can you put me on the list for the 4th run?

Good stuff. A near perfect one would be touch screen, have a large storage area, usb port(s) and wifi.

magnets would be a good choice for keeping it closed
    nice work
where did you get the led screen?
I used a .99 cent cabinet magnet and metal plate for my pipboy. They work well, but you still might want to put an elastic hair band around your pipboy to keep the thing from popping off your arm if the magnet fails. I had this problem when I flexed my arm, but the hair band kept the pipboy on my arm.

I have two small rare earth magnets in mine. They aren't strong enough to keep it closed and secure on my arm, but that's okay because it doesn't fit on my arm . I highly recommend some kind of interior strapping system.

After I get the tooling, I'll start building v2.0. So here's my "finished" v1.0. It does have sound and a working LCD photo frame.

This is the kind I used:
Stanley 71-1075 - Alum Magnet Cabinet Catch

It's really strong, but it's not foolproof. I dont' know that you can get a stronger smaller magnet. And the parts were only 99 cents. You could always double up the magnets.

    those are very weak...

    you want neodymium magnets
you might have to glue/epoxy them in place

I didn't realize they made the LCD photo frames small enough to fit those... Now, I must search, for when the next run is ready, I have an idea!

On a side note, I need to stop playing this game, I am going crazy!

Another good source for magnets is K&J Magnetics. After doing a quick comparison, it looks like their magnets are a bit more expensive, but also a bit stronger. Not all Neodymiums are created equal .

Rip open an old hard drive.
The magnets in those are ridiculously strong.

It's a 3.5" HP photoframe with built in rechargeable battery pack. I got it for about $30 off of Amazon. I had to crack the display and circuit board out of the case but otherwise it fit just fine.

Excellent work on the whole build, Scruffy! Casting, finishing, love the radio recording sound system.

I would've gone with the EL panel approach too, though probably starting with a green screen and gelling to adjust the color if necessary. I'm aware that the output's still not gonna be nearly what some superbright LEDs crank out, but the even-ness and simplicity are great.

I'm curious why you're printing the image on paper though? You could get way more output on transparency, and maybe with some diffusion gel if needed.
