Jun 15, 2012 - Opinions on some Iron Man 3D print items #1

I was looking around on Shapeways earlier today, and saw a couple things that caught my eye. I am just wondering what you guys think before I buy them. Just so people know I did'nt do any of these I don't have any experience at all with 3D printing or making 3D models.
    Helmet
    Iron Man Helmet on Shapeways
    Hands
Iron Man Left Hand on Shapeways
Iron Man Right Hand on Shapeways
They look like fairly clean models, the hands look like they will need sanding and seperations done on the fingers, and the chunk where the wrist is taken off. But other than that they are pretty good, I just want to know what you guys who have some experience with Shapeways think before I order.

Honestly, with that price you would probably be better off buying one of the helmets offered here printed from actual movie files, molded and cast.

Um, I would rather not. I know 3D printing costs are high, but I don't want to do that and next thing I know I'm being called a recaster. My plan would be to clean up the 3D print, and make molds.

Huh? What? Seriously, I'm not following you there.

The helmets offered were printed, then molded and cast for people to buy. And they are movie accurate right down to the tiniest screw, for the most part.

But still I don't want to just "buy". I would like to print, clean, mold, and provide castings.

Well, actually, if you buy another man's work (the 3D model out of shapeways), and clean that up, to make casts out of it, it can be considered a recast.
If you want to make copies to sell it will be way more safe to try to make the master yourself.

Firstly if you buy one of these prints, you have no more right to sell copies than if you bought a helmet off here (not that you ever said you were going to)

Second of all I would contact the guy and ask if you could see pics of a finished print.

Designing things for 3D print can be a tricky business, you are generally aiming to keep the whole thing as thin as possible without compromising the structure.

And with detailing you try to get it as small as possible without loosing the detail completely.

It does look like a good model, but I personally wouldn't want to pay that much without first downloading it and checking it out.
Or better still seeing a printed version so I know that the detail is as sharp in life as it is in the model and that it all fits the way it should.

If there's no picture of a print, it's likely because no one has printed one. You could end up buying a very expensive prototype.

I can tell from a quick look at the size that it is very large. It also has quite a few issues with the texture and it's not very accurate specifically right around the bottom back, ear and chin areas.
Besides like others have said you would have to ok it with the artist before just using the file for molding/casting.

Unless you have the digital artist's permission then that's considered recasting. No different from buying a helmet here and mold and cast that.

Only way to avoid recasting and do what you want to do is make the master sculpt yourself.

Ouch! How do you prove it is your own work?

I am in the process of making my own masters and just want to know the fine details as well.

The helmet showed on the website seems to be a 3D scan of the action figure...not the most accurate (and a little bit expensive).

Take loads of progress pictures, showing the evolution of your sculpt/work, documenting its development.
