    Jul 10, 2012 - nuBSG Season 1 Blaster - 3D printed #1

So this in my next project for the 3d printer. I used the photo of the stunt here as a base, and this is the side view of the model.

I used an image from someone's stunt pistol I found through google, I'm pretty sure it was on here. I can't find it again, so if anyone knows whose this is, I would appreciate letting me know so I can thank them. There was a certificate of authenticity in the background that I used to scale the pistol, assuming the certificate was originally 8.5x11.

Below is the print of half of the handle. It took about 2 hours to print. This pic was taken after a layer of glazing putty was applied and sanded. It will take at least 1 more, and then a primer coat to see where it stands.

I'm not too worried about the final finish, because I'm planning on transferring this pattern to wood with a machine I'm still working on. It's basically a 3d manual copier, called a pantograph. Mine will be quite a bit smaller than this one, and capable of cutting a reverse image.

Here's some progress. I started to print half of the main body and my printer errored in the middle of the print. So, I went ahead and used the pieces to mock up the final gun. It seems a little large, would someone with a matsuo or other version mind posting up a similar image so I can compare size?

And here's a shot of the lower barrel and how it will move. I think it's referred to an explosive round? Does anyone know what that barrel is called?

    Looks spot on to me!
It's not a Matsuo but it keeps me happy.

Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I love the season 1 blaster, I've got two of em but could always use more!

and yes that bottom barrel is for the explosive rounds.

Thanks, that helps a ton. I'll definitely keep this updated. I did also add the grooves to the back of the pistol, I just like them...

Can anyone recommend a good brand and retailer for filler primer? I'm using regular primer and it would help a ton if it could fill some small cracks.

    Thanks!

Both duplicolor and rustoleom make filler primers. I always like to hit small crack with bondo glazing and spot putty. It's pretty soft so it sands down like a dream.

Love the gun by the way!

The lower barrel is an explosive round launcher - shoots a small explosive projectile.
One thing though - the barrel doesn't move......
Where were you getting the reference material that says it does?

Here is a picture of one of the definitive ones - this is about as close to screen used as you can get.

Oh, I'm taking considerable creative license with this... There's no evidence I'm aware of that even suggests it moves. With the screw located below and behind the explosives barrel, plus that you would have to load the round somehow, I just thought it would be a cool addition.

    Ah - alright.

But JFYSA - they loaded the round from the front in the show. Straight back where it sat in top of what I can only assume would have been an electronic version of a percussion cap. No swiveling needed.

They way that it was explained to me was that the screw is the attachment point for the piece sitting in front of the trigger to hide the less interesting styling of the base revolver.

Interesting take on it though - looks good so far - interested to see that it turns out looking like.

I personally like the idealized version of the explosive round barrel. To me the functionality just makes more sense.

Thanks for the info. I thought I remembered them firing the lower barrel in the show. I was wondering how they did it.

It's weird, most of the time I go for as close to screen accurate as possible to the prop, but for some reason (guns especially) I sometimes gravitate towards a realized version of the fictional weapon.
