Nick, would you not just wear them (US8.5)?
Where's the fun in that if I can't spread the love around to my fellow nerds?

Rather than cut away the existing insert, I think you guys might be better off building it up. If you look at the real shoe (both the film shoes and the 2011 MAG), the clear part of the sole extends out from the shoe, not flush with the shoe. Maybe it is possible to light this with cutting into the sole too much.
Clear insert over yellow still makes for a yellow piece on the sole. In my mind, if you're going to go so far as to custom cast a clear insert, you might as well pull out the old one.

As for building it up...I have some ideas I will be playing around with.

There really will be nothing left of the original shoes if I have my way.

    -Nick

EDIT: After some quick scaling, I think I'm going to go with the 5-Count mesh. (Every square inch is 5 holes by 5 holes) The real deal inserts appear to be right around 4 "holes" per inch, but they don't make that for plastic canvas, so unless there's something with the same profile as plastic canvas, but with 4 holes per square inch, I think I'm stuck with the 5 count.

Nick, that was exactly what I was planning.

Cavx, there's no way to cast that new midsole without a complex 2-part mold. You're welcome to do it yourself, but I'm more than happy with an inverted copy of the current piece.

    Great minds, think alike.

I want to grab some plastic canvas to play with. My main question: how heat-formable is it?

    My thought is this:

    1) Pull off the yellow inserts.

    2) Cover the sole in plastic wrap*

    3) Use Apoxy Sculpt to create the new insert shape (Extending out)

    4) Once the Apoxy Sculpt is hardened, pull the sculpt away from the plastic wrap, heat the canvas and shape the plastic over the sculpt, gluing it down as you go.

    5) Seal, smooth, mold, and cast a [hopefully] perfect new clear sole!

That's why I want to see just what I can do with this stuff. If you have any of it, please feel free to experiment and report back, I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to go on a supply run next.

    -Nick

*That's me desperately trying not to have to make a waste cast to sculpt onto, but I could also just mold the original shape, sculpt over it, etc.

The stuff is pretty flexible, with the right glue it would probably glue down no problem.

OK. When I typed that I had my white with black MAGs in view. What about painting or colouring the area around the EL tape black? Would that not help make it stand out even more?

I know next to nothing on mold making. Done a heap of research and did some resin casting a few back, but that is about it. Those molds were single molds that just needed filling. After much $$$ and frustration, I did learn to mix and pour casting resin without bubbles but not after buying a vacuum pump and building a vacuum chamber. What a waste of time and money that was as the resin boils under vacuum and creates even more bubbles than the vacuum will pull.

    What is an inverted copy?

    Yep...

It's tempting to buy them and repair the NIKE light but I wouldn't pay $2900 for them. Maybe $1700-$2000.

Email him Brad. He's clearly deperate! I reckon he would take $1500 for them. If anyone can repair them it's you. It's only a 5mm el tape going through the strap, you can see it very clearly close up. He's CLEARLY pulled the strap tight when wearing them like a div and it's torn. I don't think it would be difficult to peel open the strap and put a thin layer of solder in there to complete the connection.

I may be wrong, but worth a punt if you offer him the above..?

When I bought mine in 2010, I was under the impression that he was selling off the stock of the batch and that no more would be made. Mine looked like they had been in storage for some time as there was dust and even some sort of stain on the tongue. It all cleaned up OK though.

He probably has thousands of them. He's been selling off stock for 3 years now.

That's funny. He made it sound like stock was low and if I didn't buy right now, I'd miss out. Yet he wouldn't say how many were made or how many were available.

I bought some clear blue spray paint and had a go on one of my "test" soles. What do you guys think?

Wow! That actually coated much better than I would have thought. A definite improvement over the yellow sole inserts! Great job.

Now throw some EL behind those puppies so we can really see them rock.

Looks as good or better than what SO2 was doing with all the trouble of removing the yellow part and soaking in bleach and all that. Will it let the EL paper shine through?

It's amazing how big of a difference there is between outdoor and indoor lighting on those things. The blue sole changes the entire look of it.

What's your plan? Leave em, strip em, try again?

If you're looking for other ideas for mods, I know sneakerheads have developed a UV activated bath (With Oxiclean and other chemicals in it) to de-yellow soles. Might be a tad extreme though.
