That tricorder almost looks like one of those shake and charge flashlights cobbled on to the pepper mill.
With exception of the earpiece, those look like (Expletive deleted)
Here's a higher resolution version of the writing on the scanner:
Can anybody read what it says? I can make out a "W O O" towards the end.
Dunno if this helps much...

NEWS UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I called and talked to the company sponsoring the mini exhibit and spoke to a gentleman who told me that the Communicator lid does open but reveals no controls of any kind.
My guess is that the Communicators are now Audio/Visual and the "Hal 9000" eye is the viewing screen.

Shoulda asked him what it says on the bottom of the scanner
EDIT- Was just reading the toy description on Entertainment Earth...
"This Star Trek Electronic Communicator is within exact details of the one used in the movie. The cover manually flips open to reveal a lenticular label of Kirk and Spock. The Communicator also lights up, has authentic character voices, and sound affects from the movie. The 2 different buttons activate different sequences of sounds and lights!"
It mentions buttons. So maybe the one on display is a stunt piece or something and not a hero?

This movie is gonna rock, and I can't WAIT to talk about how much I want replicas of the gadgets - and not be able to afford them!
Either way, I will be at the midnight showing, but my Star Trek shirt on!
Well, McCoy's scanner looks like it should be pretty cheap, if only we could identify all the parts. (Hint hint.) I'm 90% sure there isn't a custom bit on that thing.
Looking at it more closely, the black-capped part with the mysterious writing seems to have a threaded metal bit inside the tube with two black wires soldered to it. Also, the end cap with the hashing and writing seems to be a different piece from the rest of the cap--a big push button, maybe?
And that metal loop and metal plate on the other end look like some kind of syringe plunger, either of the medical or cake icing variety, but an hour or more on Google has turned up nothing that matched exactly.
Hello everyone, this is my first post besides my introduction and I hope there are many more.
I have given a lot of thought about McCoy's scanner and to me, the bottom looks very similar to a click on, or clicky tail cap to a small flashlight. I havn't been able to identify the exact one, but they normally boast the company name in a similar configuration around the button.
In this photo you can clearly see threads and the part of the flashlight bottom that would press against the battery.
Compare to:
I am still trying to ID the exact flashlight but googling "tail cap" yielded all these pics. I also found some pretty cheap caps on Ebay.
