New QMX Phaser from Star Trek Into Darkness

Mine is pretty good. The details of the "warning" text near the barrel is slightly soft on the w, and there are some bad paint lines on the inside where the thing rotates, but only noticeable when you're looking close up. Rotation mechanism works good for me. A nice display or cosplay piece.

I'm exchanging it. My new one is already in the mail, and I'm sending back the warped one tomorrow.

Does Amazon ask you to send the whole package (Bluray and phaser) back for replacement? Just wanted to know since then I wouldn't download the digital copy from the DVD if I was to exchange it. I won't get mine until this next Monday. Fingers crossed for a good one.

I think they picked the wrong group of people when they made these sub-par phasers - we Trekkies are meticulous with details. I'm glad to hear that there's another, better version coming out, soon.

One thing that bothered me about the new phasers is the cut-off "shots" from it, instead of the ability to shoot a steady beam, like in TOS through the various newer series. I guess it's more fun for the younger people to see the "pew pew."

I'm interested to see if/how the phasers will change over the next few movies.

My phaser was fine and unwarped as well. I'm very happy with mine, even with a couple small issues (the barrel rotation tends to get a bit stiff around 90 degrees into it, and there's a little red paint slop on the kill barrel). Considering that you get a finished phaser for less than you would expect to pay for a raw resin casting, if they were even available, I can't complain (though were mine warped as some describe I definitely would go for an exchange!).

For those wondering, the barrels are designed to catch in position via small magnets under the cowling. It's not a perfect system given how much friction there is in the rotation, but it's not bad:

I have some other comparison photos in this flickr album.

QMx's website says that they made all the stunt phaser props for the movie, and that this is an "authentic" version of the stunt props. There's an implication there, but does anyone know exactly what they mean by this? Are these made with the same processes and molds and in the same shop as the stunt props they produced for the movie? Or did they farm out the replicas overseas and are using marketing speak to make them sound identical?

Wow your barrel angles look great on this. A small amount of scratches or paint smudges just make it seem more like a real prop anyway.

Nice shots too! Hats off to JHusel for his great photos too!!

Prop collectors in general probably shouldn't be QMx's market for anything. And I'd put good money on the better QMx edition costing upwards of $500-1000.

I'm currently checking things out online for a nylon holster similar to what was used in the sequel but not sure what size/type to get. I understand I won't find a perfect match for what was used on-screen, so I am simply going for something that will hold the phaser nicely and generally look the part.

Looks like a early concept of the kelvin, the handle is shorter than the screen used one. I'm glad I bowed out of this one from QMX, looks like ill be waiting forever for a nice one, as I bet good money QMX will never release a hero version.

Is that a concept phaser, or a Kelvin phaser used in the opening sequence?

Yes, it's a replica of the Kelvin phaser seen early in the first movie. I'd forgotten it was used. The quite talented and accurate builder is our own DaveG. Here's the build thread: http://www.therpf.com/f9/star-trek-kelvin-phaser-project-109585/

The replica Kelvin handle is the exact length as the original prop and the knurling on the handle is the same too, though Dave did a few small things a tiny bit different (though almost unnoticeable). It's probably my quick cameraphone angled image that makes it look shorter.

This is really sad. We've seen trouble like this when HCG did their Pulse Rifle replica. I think it is really hard on us fans and collectors who often are on a fixed budget for our non-essentials in life.
Last year I was able to buy the 09 version phaser at an incredible discount and that one, though static, is pretty much perfect in design.

I too got the 2009 QMX Trek Phaser and got the super rare rocket charm. It is almost perfect and that's why I ordered this new one. I hope to get a fairly straight nozzle on mine.

Isn't that the Kelvin Phaser?
