This looks super cool! also, why is it called a cowl?

You know that is a good question... I guess it kinda goes along with a mask like Batman's which is traditionally refered to as a cowl. May apply to masks that cover the head and over the nose area. I like to refer to Caps as a "helmet" due to its "military" application even though I called it a mask in my thread subject. I don't really think that Cap was wearing a "mask" because he wasn't trying to hide anything. Everyone knew who he was.
These are just my thoughts. Thanks for the compliment.
Bobby, I seem to be having problems with receiving emails. If I don't reply, kindly send me a PM here on theRPF if it wouldn't be too much troubleThank you!

Are the picture files too big for your computer?
Any updates on the helmet? Are you getting ready for Avengers? I know everyone is going to explode with pics of their costumes when the movie comes out.
No, nothing really new to report. Work on them has slowed down a bit but is picking back up. I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes up as far as a rekindled interest in Captain America props. There were some amazing uniforms and helmets done for TFA and like you, think that in the next few days it will blow up on this site. Cap specific stuff might be minimal from the new movie because they have to split screen time with the many different characters, but I'll be there... Still, The First Avenger uniform is my favorite![]()
I agree. Excited to see what else comes out of this silence after the movie hits.
I am just blown away. Thanks for sharing this experience with us. I am blown away by the humble tenacity with which you pursue perfection. Well done!
Hey Samaritan,
Rekindled this old thread huh?!? Thanks for the kind words!! I ran into a major set back for the folks that wanted one. I had them on the "front burner" and was moving along nicely until my improper storage techniques caused them all to get too hot and mold into one nasty mass of sad looking Cap Helmets. (main reason I didn't like to take money until I'm ready to ship) So needless to say it took the wind out of my sails. I turned out a few and have done a few raw casts but that is about where I am with it. The one I made for myself I did out of the urethane rubber but am getting stumped at what kind of paint to use for the flexible rubber. If I can get some progress with that I may start back up again using this method. Thanks again for the compliment. I'll post some updated pics of the one I did for myself soon. I changed up the leather and used a naturally weathered appearance rather that one with a "formed in" pattern.
Ha. May I quote Alfred Pennyworth? "Why do we fall, sir? So that we can learn...to pick ourselves up" ;-)
I would love to get in on any run you do. But have the large head issue that may hobble that. I am prob 7 3/4 to 7 7/8.
Will all your future helmets be urethane?
Great job on the helmet!!! How did you do the leather liner???
Thanks morcon, I modeled it after an old leather flight helmet liner. I guestimated the size panels to fit my head and sewed it together w/ my machine. It was a lot of trial and error (A bunch more "error"). It still isn't exactly right but for now I've moved on to my uniform build and will come back to the liner. Thanks!
I have an update on my helmet. I turned out a successful urethane version:

Alright, so a week after I painted the one in the above pic it turned tacky like the others but I think I got it. I tried my hand at weathering it so here is how far I got with it:
Not sure if I like it or not. I do like the clean look of the non-weathered one but weathered is more accurate...![]()
Looking good Bobby! Can't wait to try my hand at one![]()
Amazing build! What did you use to weather the front of the helm?
I took a Dremel tool with a cutter type blade on it and worked it down into the helmet leaving it kinda "chewed up" looking. Then added white into the cut areas and then while it was wet I brushed it out in quick strokes to imitate "glancing blows" then followed that direction with a lighter to kinda set it in and give a burnt look.
Glad you like it
I'm finally getting back to work on my "hero" helmet, with a full leather liner complete with a BROTHERFOSTER helmet data platePics coming soon !
Okay, I finally got around to finishing up my full leather liner and added my awesome helmet data plate I received from BROTHERFOSTER today.
I was hoping to accomplish a "real world/hero" look and feel to the helmet. I haven't decided yet whether or not I want to battle damage it. Maybe get some direction/imput from you guys...
Top notch as usual, Bobby! Maybe some slight weathering instead of full-on battle damage...
That new liner looks tremendous my friend! Awesome work as usual. And I would concur with Kevin that some light weathering would probably look pretty good.
