Apr 15, 2007 - New to forum and need help #1

Hello everyone! New to this forum and prop making. I've been scanning this forum for about a week and I have to tell ya, I'm so intrigued by what you guys/gals do and the talent you all have. I think I've found a second home and hopefully a new hobby (if I have the talent & time) thanks to you all. I would like to try out making my first prop but I need a little direction from you talented artists. I would like to know where to look about book binding. Maybe some place to show me how I can do it myself or a company that can do it and not be too expensive. Also need to know what supplies I would need to make a prop book (real or faux leather cover, glue, paper etc.). One more thing...I would like to find out how I could get a design drawn up in some 3d program and a place where I can get the design proto made. Don't want to be a bother to anyone but you have any info or tips that could help, I'd really appreciate it. I look forward to seeing everyones new projects and hopefully someday soon contributing help & my work to everyone.

Send PMs to members Indy Magnoli and Sulla - both do book binding and make incredible Indy diaries. If anybody could point you in the right direction, it would be those two.

Oh, and welcome to the board .

Hi, welcome to the forum and the hobby !

I am currently (at this moment) working on a 3D-to-reality-prop project, and have been working on it slowly for the last two years. I decided to take this route since I had initally wanted to do a prop that hasn´t been done before and that was meant to be carried while wearing a certain costume to the EP3 premiere. In addition, I was kind of zooming back and forth the country for the better of the last two years, so I had no real place to set up shop for physical prop making.

Since I had quite some experience in 3D, I thought it would be a good idea to start this project. I was kind of wrong. Being an architect, I have been working with CAD and 3D programs for the last 15 years, buuut modelling something organic and yet screen accurate proved some kind of a challenge.

What I am saying is, when you venture into the area of 3D without any previous experience, be prepared to invest a lot of time into this until you really master a 3D program. You may want to try "Blender" for a start, its free and (kind of) easy to use.

The 3D-proto thingamagig has been done by various members with more experience than I have, and I am sure that they will chime in. You might want to do a search for "stl" "rapid prototyping" "sla" .

Hope to see something from you soon !

Thanks again for all the help. I'm going to see what I can do with attempting a prop.
