Jun 29, 2009 - My Knight Rider KITT car is nearly complete! #1

Hey gang,

Thought I would share some pictures of my newly finished Knight Rider
KITT replica. Just got it assembled this weekend after months of working
on the interior components. This a very close and accurate representation
of the car used in the first season of Knight Rider. I chose to replicate a
bit later in the seaosn when the car got it's new voice box. I wasn't a
fan of the blinking box they used early on.

The dash is a restored original (Yes, others have claimed this), but this
one IS in fact an orignal. It features the fiberglass dash, bonded to the
stock dash pad as the series car had.

All the buttons are the same exact ones as used in the series as well. The
ones that could not be located were replicated via computer and then
rapid prototyped into a new part that ould be molded. The function pods
which contain the Turbo Boost, Auto Roof and so on are all prototyped
parts.

The electronics are near exact copies also using the original LEDs found
in the series cars. Although, these are fully functional gauges and will
read all of your normal cars functions as well as a few added extras. The
electronics were made by one of the specialty vendors in the hobby.

The overlays for the electronics were made by myself. Designed in
coreldraw12 and etched and cut via a laser cutting system we have
at work. The restoration of the fiberglass dash as well as all of the
other fiberglass consoles were created by both myself and a fellow
friend and vendor of these parts.

Anways, Onto some pictures. I'll try and get more taken as it gets
darker outside. These were taken after one of the shows I attended
yesterday. KITTs first appearence out in over 2 years brought in
second place at the show.

Enjoy!

Amazing! I've always wondered - what is it like to steer with that type of steering "wheel" - is it hard to take turns that involve multiple wheel revolutions?

THe lights look FANTASTIC!

Thanks guys. Glad you like it.

My camera doesn't have video capabilities but I will see if I can find
someone near me who does.

The dash has the full start up features like the original and YEs, He does
talk. The voicebox has it's own sound source which is independant and
not part of the normal radio like most people use.

The buttons also have the tone sounds when pressed. I can hook the
buttons up to features as well but that will come at a later date. The
wallet is a little dry at the moment.

As far as who took first place at the show. It was some rare El-Camino
that beat me out for first place. But second works for me.

More photo's to come soon (and hopefully a video or two)....

You did an amazing job on your Knight Rider Kitt car and it must have cost you a small fortune.

Is this Trans Am a T-Top car?

Yes,

The car is a 1982 Trans Am. It has t-tops, but I have sun shades in them.
Keeps the sun out and the interior cooler.

The car itself only has 30000 original miles on it. It also has a new engine
which only has a few hundred miles on it.

As for the cost of this, I can say the dollar amount invested is more than
the mileage. And continues to grow. Hence empty wallet. LOL.

Your Kitt car is definitely close to perfection and t-tops definitely makes the car.

Joey Fatone was on Mtv Cribs and he scored an actual tv show car.

I have wanted a KITT replica for years but never had the funds. Plus living in deer country and not actually having a molecular bonded shell, Bambi would do serious damage.

That can't be right... 30000 original miles on a car that's more than 25 years old. My car is five years old and has that much on it and that's extremely low.

Easily done. My father owns a 1966 Corvette with 57,000 original miles.
