My Finished Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll - POTC 4 OST

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll

.....I'll see if I can find a firmer piece of balsa next shopping trip and maybe give it another go---maybe use a duller knife :) .........

Nooooooooooooo ! :lol It has to be very sharp. If you use a dull knife, you will find that the balsa will squish down while you are trying to carve it. In fact, use a brand new blade. Just go slow. Once you finish the thing, a coat of matt lacquer will 'harden' it.

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll

Thanks @ Shylaa

I will give it a try in..... uhm.... next year... :lol

I try to get my costume complete, tomorrow my sword arrives, I have to repaint it. Then I have to decide what I start first, map or chalices... I guess the chalices, but who knows...

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll

Alan Castillo: Okay, sharp knife then!

Onkelpsycho: Will grant you a little time since you're working on your costume and all, but not a year......... :)

paploo: Only what is true, only what is true!!

I've carved a bit on the head. I'd really like to salvage this head for the time being as I don't have a lot of time left to work on him with the holidays pressing in on me.

I got rid of those chubby cheeks, and deepened the eye sockets a bit--I don't know, Alan, was that what you meant by deeper brow?

Does the nose need some 'smalling' down.....?

Any and all hints tips and suggestions much appreciated......

Thanks,
Shylaah

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll

Nom not a year, just said next year, thats only about 3 months... :lol

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll

It's a bit difficult to tell from the small pics Shylaah, but from what I can see, you have to put the 'forehead level' a little higher than the 'cheek / eye level', and the 'eye-sockets' themselves have to go a little deeper too.

But I suggest you leave this one as it is. Try it with a new balsa one.

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll

Great to see your progress Shylaah, you are definitely getting there! :thumbsup
(and nice to hear the sketch helped you out :))

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll - POTC 4 OST

Onkelpsycho: Okay. January then.....we'll be waiting!
Oh, oh I know! You can do the box! Someone needs to start on the Chalice box. It's so gorgeous!!

Alan Castillo: Yeah, I can't really add anything to this one I'm trying to salvage. I'll not be able to heat it to cure the clay because the synthetic hair would melt! BTW, I found one of the balsa heads I had a stab at, he somehow avoided the dust bin?! Pic below and you can see he looks more like the Indy doll than the Jack doll--actually that's probably an insult to the Indy doll :lol

Dutchman: Immeasurably!

Latest scratching around in the salvage operation. Penciled in some eyes....is it getting close enough??

Okay, floundering around and finishing up on my own then.......

Finished--at least as finished as he is going to get this round.
Maybe after the holidays I can play some more at carving and come up with something better.

Need to dress the body, glue on the head and post a "My finished dolly thread"!

Thanks again to all for your help and encouragement. Much appreciated.

I think it looks great, Shylaah! For someone who's claiming not having any skills, it's a job well done!!! I like the plasticity ( is that a word?) of your sculpt. It's a real little sculpture instead of a 2d relief.
Can't wait to see it put together :thumbsup

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll - POTC 4 OST

I think it's brilliant ! Why on earth would you want to try and carve another one !

(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll - POTC 4 OST

Thanks, Dutchman! I personally do like him, but feared there might be some Pygmalion type thing going on cause I made him!!? And yes, plasticity is a word!

Thanks, Alan! Because I guess I really wanted the wood thing to work out!?

Well, I have more irons in the fire right now than I can handle, but I hope to get him all glued together and get some finished pics by sometime this coming weekend. My Finished Captain Jack Sparrow Voodoo Doll thread coming soon to a forum near you :) Much thanks once again for everything!

Looks good, and what a nice kitty in the picture. He could almost be a brother to mine. I can't wait to see it assembled.

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll - POTC 4 OST

Love it, truly awesome piece! Cool website you got there goin'.

Re: My Headless Jack (Sparrow voodoo) Doll - POTC 4 OST

Thank you, ecl!

Seems some people don't like to click on links and leave the RPF "fold".....
so here are the finished pics posted on my Jack pages. Too many of the
progress pics to post here and clutter up everything.

Thanks Sparrowed!

Got my neighbor to play Blackbeard!
