    Jul 29, 2009 - Maltese Falcon #1

So who owns or produces a fairly screen accurate Maltese falcon prop? The only reputable seller that I have found is haunted studios (sell all the celebrity life casts). I read something on a site called thefedoralounge about a guy who makes a nice one, but I was in a hurry and didn't read into it Anyone have this one or one of better quality? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

No one has really made a really accurate one except Adam Savage, but due to shrinkage (it wasn't THAT cold) it wasn't sized right. He may do a run when he gets it just right, look at http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=58574

Maybe Adam will chime in. He has gone to extensive length the produce his own screen accurate (in lead and correct weight) version. Maybe he has some advice.

Thanks for the info guys! I had no idea Adam was working on one. That will be very interesting to see when it is all said and done.

I have an MK falcon, and I'm really happy with it. (MK is the guy from Fedora Lounge.)

MK's is very impressive! I hear that it is nearly impossible to get them now.

I hope Adam does go through with a run of these as I'm sure that MANY people here would love to get a hold of one.

The ebay one is more than likely from haunted studios.

It's the Main prop from the movie The Maltese Falcon. You should read up on it. It's a very good movie.

Very true! I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. Some people steer clear of old black and whites, but a lot of them have more depth and character than modern films. It was all in the characters and the plot! No CGI or big fiery explosions to keep people entertained!

I should note that I've held an MK Falcon, and it's a nice bird. I believe mine is currently more accurate, (Yes, mine is too small, and YES, I do plan a run of them at some point. Sad thing is: I end up with 3 interim silicon molds of the thing, and I wouldn't sully the market with their inaccuracy.) but MK is the ONLY other replica maker to pay attention (and careful attention) to the auction photos. I believe his topology of the bird is nearly dead-on, I just have some issues with the proportions here and there. I also have issues with many of the proportions of my (now interim) falcon. The eyes and eyebrows are real ball busters from a sculptural standpoint.

I have since met a real falcon, (don't ask yet) and based on what I learned there, have decided to re-sculpt my bird from scratch.

    sigh.

Yep, I'll even make my sculpt sufficiently large to account for shrinkage (apparently it WAS that cold).

THEN I'll have a nice durable urethane mold made and do a run. You know how these things go though, could be a few weeks, could be a few months.

I noted with interest though, that the "collectibles" company, Haunted Studios, that's been selling their version of the bird on ebay for what seems like forever, has recently upgraded their bird. All of a sudden (I'm not saying the popularity of my talk on the subject was the cause, but the timing is interesting) it went from the gross piece of **** that was likely the sculpt from "The Black Bird" the weird comedy sequel with George Segal from 1972 (I'm convinced that many of the "original" castings come from THIS bird), to a bird with a much more accurate chest, based on detents, rather than sculpted feathers.

(over the years, many have tried to explain the discrepancy between the commonly visible sculpted feathers of the various copies and the clearly missing feathers in both the Profiles in History auction photos of the resin bird AND in the Christie's catalog photos, by saying that what one was seeing were stages of finishing: i.e. that the bird was sculpted with feathers and then sanded down.
This is completely false. There are ****ty copies of the bird, and as far as I know, NO known copies of the original out there in the public market. And believe me I've looked)

Also, I noted with further interest that Haunted Studios now WRAPS THEIR BIRDS IN A CHINESE NEWSPAPER, just as I said was the reason I had bought a 1940's San Francisco Chinatown newspaper to accurately copy and wrap my bird in. I'm just saying the coincidence in interesting.

I ordered one of their new birds right away, in hopes that it was nice, but it's not. It's a piece of ****. Fat neck, irregularities. It's a crap, overextended mold, and a boring bird.

Shame. I hate that they've been peddling that crappy dingus for so long, but what can you do?

A run, that's what. And I will get to it eventually.

If you haven't read the book The Maltese Falcon, read it. Best Hammett book. Evar.

If you haven't seen the movie, for chrissakes, see it. In fact, I once read the book and saw the movie in the same day. Awesome thing to try.

    That is all...

    Okay Adam,
Did the owner of the real Falcon let you take detailed photos? Would he not let you laser scan it like you had mentioned in your talk?

It is interesting that with all the interest, and I am interested, that someone else hasn't done this sculpture.

So when MB goes on hiatus, can we expect and interest list?

    End of Line...

    Hey...

I never saw that movie. How should I know the falcon?!?

I only saw the prop on ebay and in the video with adam. So I can search now google, or I can ask someone of you...

So, I should search google next time, if I dont know something, and then I should talk like I always know about these stuff?!? Should I lie to you?!?

A quick search in the ofdb show me that there are 2 movies from 1931 and 1941. But I must truely tell you, Im not really interested in movies of that time period. Sure, there are some good movies, which are important for the movie buisness and hollywood...

The earliest movie I ver saw was from the 60's. I think a lot of these movies never came out here. The 1941 movie is out, but the 1931 not... And after all the movies were not shown in the tv.

I think its the little difference between the countries. If you ask here, if someone know the movie, max. 10% know it. If you ask in your country it will be more, hm???

And 95% of young people from 18-30 are defineatly not interested in this stuff...

So, I hope you all will forgive me... I am only a little german's kid...

The Maltese Falcon is as well-known as STAR WARS, Wizard of Oz, you name it... all are iconic.

And for not seeing movies from that period, well, you're missing out.

And thats the difference... Stars Wars know everyone, I know Wizard of Oz, too. Buf if you ask some people over here, they will know the wizard of oz somehow, but not exactly the movie...

Same for King Kong, everyone knows King Kong, the character; but here most people dont know the movie, maybe only the PJ Version...

Same for Lost World or these kind of movies...

I think many people in the US are more interested in these old movies. I cant explain exactly why, but its like that...

No, not just the U.S. They are universal.

    Or so I thought?
