    Jun 16, 2012 - magneto helmet cardboard #1

hello, all. i hope this is the right forum to place this in. i have just recently joined this forum, and i am COMPLETELY inexperienced. i just recently started sewing superhero costumes, i've done a few, but i'm still learning how to sew... now i want to get into props for the costumes, i.e magneto helmets, cyclops visors, batarangs, and the such... well, my VERY first project is a magneto helmet. i have constructed it so far out of cardboard, and now need to move to the next step. from what i've gathered, i should treat it in resin... which i'm not entirely sure what that is. so i looked online, and there's fiberglass resin, epoxy resin, mcdonalds resin all different types of resins to chose from, and i wonder for this particular project, which should i buy....

I suggest you search a few threads on card board building, such as member Atlanthia΄s stormtrooper helmet build, and I think there is another card board magneto around.

Your helmet top is IMO not round enough and would require a lot of bondo, making it very heavy in the end to get it rounded. You may want to redo the top, using smaller strips of cardboard, laid over each other in a criss cross pattern, probably lightly misting the cardboard with water so that it bends without any creases.

    Otherwise, good project!

ive not done any but what your refering to is the pepakura style of build but you appear to be using corrugated card which i believe isnt suitable for the resin portion perhaps paper mache (white school glue and newspaper) might be more suitable to your build as suggested check atlanthia's build

Listen to these guys. There is a sticky link on the Replica Costumes Forum dealing entirely with Pepakura, and there is some really great information there. I am just trying it for the first time myself. You can get a Pepakura viewer free and even the Designer is free so long as you don't plan on saving any modifications you make regarding changing the scale of your build. And there are some free pep files created by vary talented members of this board for the comic and movie versions of Magneto's helm. Give it a shot. And pick up a pack of 110 lb paper/cardstock. It works great.

The resin is fiberglass resin you can get at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc, and it is a two-part compound that comes with hardener. Build your prop, coat it a few times with resin/hardener, fiberglass the interior and bondo the outside. Those are the basic steps.

hey, man. thanks for the advice. i'm slowly building up my arsenal of materials, as of right now, i have everything i need to start the project. i just printed out the pep file, i downloaded the designer, and got it from there. so i'm gonna work on this, and afterwards start on a red hood helmet if i can find a pep file (for free)... not that i don't appreciate the work ppl put into making them, i just wish i could get one without paying, but i guess if i have to, i understand. well, hope to keep hearing from you guys as i delve into this whole thing...

There are lots of free ones out there. For some reason I think I read about a Red Hood file, but I'm not sure. Always good to give a shout out to the creator when you use one. I'm in the midst of my first build as well. Just finished my first paper build only to find it was too small. Watch out for setting the right scale for youself. I see a lot of guys have to build a few versions before they get just the right size. All about patience, right?

well, i really like black's pep file, so if i don't find one tonight, i'll pay for his in the morning cuz i really want it. i've learned with this new hobby here that i have to be really patient. i want things done in one evening, and i noticed it doesn't work like that... but its all owrth it. i'm looking at your picture, the batman suit. i'm going as batman for halloween this year, so i'm gonna get started on that soon... just gotta learn how to sculpt and mold of which i know nothing right now... but before this all started, i didn't know how to sew, so...

Neither did I. Then I made my cape, gloves, etc., then built suits for my wife an son as well. I actually did not sculpt this cowl, but acquired it in a trade. But for this project, like you, I want to build the helmet myself just to try something new.

I already know which style I want my batman cowl n costume to look like. Ive never sculpted before, I've also never made a mold of my own head, but I plan on starting next week, so... Here we go
